Late Iron Age to Early Roman copper alloy toggle of late 1st century BC to 2nd century AD date The cast toggle is of ‘dumbbell’ form without a loop and appears to be complete (with a length of 27.3mm and a weight of 12.9g). Both terminals are flattened, sub-spherical (with a maximum diameter of 12.0mm and a length of 8mm). Before each terminal is a collar (9mm diameter), enhanced with a central groove, now largely worn. The toggle is narrowest across the central part (6.0mm dimeter and 5.8mm long), which is differentially worn, probably by a strap or similar. The surface is p…

A copper alloy terminal probably from an Iron Age or early Roman toggle. The object probably dates from 100 BC - 100 AD. The artefact is broadly a T shape with the lower horizontal bar comprising two baluster shaped knops. At the mid-point a square shaped socket extends - the upper edge has a recessed circular socket. The front and rear faces have the remains of broken rivet holes. There is no evidence of iron present. within the socket. The front and rear faces are decorated with both cast and incised lines forming two converging wedge shapes. The recessed areas of the baluster are p…

Cast copper-alloy toggle, of probable late Iron Age or early Roman date (300 BC – 100 AD). The head of the toggle is broadly irregular being broadly cylindrical (sub-rectangular) in plan with a single triangular loop projecting from one of the long edges. In profile and cross section the toggle is sub-circular, D shaped. The toggle measures 31.2mm length, 16.8mm width, is 10.1mm thick and weighs 7.74 grams. The head of the toggle is broadly symmetrical in design. It consists of a central knob like projection from which two small pointed spurs extend in either edge. The centre…

Silver toggle or fitting with globular knop on each side. Narrow body expanding at each end into a globule, creating an overall dumb-bell shape. Globules are of un-uniform size. Copper-alloy and bone examples of similar objects have been dated to the Iron Age, a similar shaped toggle can be found in Read (2005). An Iron Age object of this type is extremely rare. Analysis results of the toggle show that it is 97% silver the rest being copper, with traces of lead and gold; the amount of gold indicates that this toggle is not of Iron Age date, the manufacturing technique correspond…

Cast copper alloy toggle or fastener of probable Late Iron Age date (150BC - 50 AD). The toggle is irregular in plan and broadly sub-oval in cross section. It is cast in one piece with a relatively thick slightly irregular oval (with a slightly pointed edge) shaped loop. From this pointed end a sub-rectangular shaped shank projects which terminates in a sub-spherical knop. The loop of the toggle and its cross section are irregular. The upper face has a domed convex profile whilst the lower is relatively flat in comparison. The internal edges of the loop are also rounded. The projecting…
