Fragment of a piece of later prehistoric metalwork, most probably a later Iron Age terret ring. The fragment is irregular in plan and cross section; it curves and tapers slightly from a rectangular sectioned bar to an oval section at an angle of less than 30%. If it were from a terret ring this would fit with the transition from base to loop. The patina is a mid brown colour and has substantially laminated revealing the metal beneath which has corroded. The fragment measures 31.2mm length, 8.7mm width and is 6.9mm thick; it weighs 7.31 grams

Cast copper alloy bracelet of unknown age – probably late Iron Age – Roman (100 BC-100 AD). The bracelet is formed from a cast length of copper alloy bar which seems to have been twisted in a vice. The twists for the most part are regular, although a series of stress fractures are evident in a number of places. It is possible that it has been cast – although the mould it was cast from must have been based upon a twisted example. The bracelet is broadly C shaped, with an open edge which is flanked by two bird head like terminals. In cross section is a relative regular oval. The te…

The external edge has a raised rib which encircles the boss accentuating the depth of the contained annulet groove. Both the long and short edges have slight mid-point projections / thic…

A complete but heavily distorted cast copper-alloy late Iron Age / La Tene III Nauheim derivative style brooch dated c. 50 BC - AD 100. The brooch is complete but heavily distorted through movement in the ploughsoil. The brooch is cast in one piece with an integrally cast spring consisting of three coils with an internal spring chord. The pin is oval in section and tapers along its length - the point / tip terminates in a sharp point. The turns of the spring and chord of the spring have a distinct rectangular section. The head of the bow narrows at the spring, then expands in section …

Copper alloy bow brooch of unusual form, probably of Late Hallstatt or early La Téne; Early Iron Age date (c. 700 - 400BC) The brooch is near-complete, missing the pin and has a length of 52.2mm and weighs 14.2g. At the rear of the head is a perforation of 2.4mm diameter; the perforation is aligned with the catch-plate and it is possible that the brooch was secured with a separate pin which travelled through the head and was lodged in the catch plate. Each side of the head there are two integral spherical knobs (6.5mm diameter), giving the head a width of 18.1mm. The bow is arch…

A copper alloy bridle bit, possibly dating to the late Iron Age to the Roman period (circa 100BC to 200AD). The object consists of two bars placed parallel with a central moulded collar which has been worn and thus less prominent. On each end of the bit, one bar has broken off and the other continues a short distance, curving slightly outwards before also ending in a break. The object has a green surface patina, with areas of pitting, and is overall smooth.  It is similar to WMID-8B23B3 and OXON-2C1494, suggesting this object is likely a bridle bit dating fro…

An incomplete cast copper alloy tankard handle of probable later Iron Age or very early Roman date (c. 150 BC - 100 AD). The handle has an openwork design that is similar to that seen on several tankards and can be paralleled against the design seen on mirror handles. The handle is fragmentary consisting of the upper part only; the break on the lower edge is old and patinated suggesting damage in antiquity. In plan the handle is irregular being broadly sub-rectangular; in profile it is bowed with an even (elegant) curve; the cross section is irregular. The upper bow of the handle i…

Incomplete fragment from a cast copper alloy cosmetic mortar (also known as cosmetic or woad grinder) of late Iron Age to early Roman date circa 300 BC - 200 AD. The cosmetic mortar is incomplete - all that remains is the looped terminal and a small part of the grinding surface. The loop is cast integral to the body of the mortar and forms one of the terminals. Unusually for the type the loop has a uniform width and thickness; there is no form of junction where the loop returns and meets with the body of the grinder and no decorative motifs. The loop though the terminal is relatively …
