Incomplete fragment from a cast copper alloy cosmetic mortar (also known as cosmetic or woad grinder) of late Iron Age to early Roman date circa 300 BC - 200 AD. The cosmetic mortar is incomplete - all that remains is the looped terminal and a small part of the grinding surface. The loop is cast integral to the body of the mortar and forms one of the terminals. Unusually for the type the loop has a uniform width and thickness; there is no form of junction where the loop returns and meets with the body of the grinder and no decorative motifs. The loop though the terminal is relatively …

Cast copper alloy fragment of unknown function – most likely to be part of a harness of later Iron Age or Roman date (200 BC – 400 AD). The fragment is cast in one piece; it consists of four circles conjoined on their edges to form an irregular quatrefoil in plan. In cross section the artefact is sub-rectangular. Through the centre of the quatrefoil is an irregular sub-rectangular hole, it is positioned at the junction between the four circles. The hole measures 5.4mm x 3.6mm. Each of the four circles differs in size, although they seem to be ordered with the largest example (diame…

Cast copper alloy pin or stud of probable later Iron Age or early Roman date 200 BC – 200 AD). The stud is complete consisting of a domed bi-convex head which tapers to a slight short shaft. The head is decorated with an incised pattern of a debased spiral formed from incised lines set around a central raised pellet or dome. The pattern is not well achieved being uneven and irregular in design. The shaft is an irregular square shaped section which tapers to a point. The pin is a mid brown green colour with a thick well polished patina which is abraded and laminating. The length of th…

A cast copper alloy ‘miniature’ knobbed terret ring of probable later Iron Age or early Roman date (100 BC - 200 AD). The ring is broadly D shaped in plan, with a D shaped cross section. At the base of the ring is a horizontal bar with an oval cross section. This bar has an old fracture through it and is distorted in profile. The bar itself is slight and much thinner than the ring, it is also slightly offset. The ring itself is thick with distinct angular faces; it is regular in shape forming a regular U shaped arch. The upper part of this arch is decorated with a series of five ev…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A cast copper alloy ring of unknown date, most probably Iron Age or early Roman (300 BC- 100AD). The function of the ring is debatable, but is probably either a belt ring or harness ring. The ring is circular in plan and has a distinct angular sub-triangular cross section; the section has its thickest part on the outer edge of the ring and is narrowest at the centre. The upper and lower surfaces have distinct faceted edges. There is no evidence of either cast or applied decoration and all casting residue has been removed from the surface of the ring. The internal edge of the ring is wo…

A cast copper alloy fragment from the chape of a scabbard of a later Iron Age (La Tène III) sword (c. 200-50 BC). The fragment is irregular in plan and profile with a large fragment of iron passing through the centre of the piece; this iron fragment is probably the remains of the sword blade. In plan the piece is broadly sub-rectangular with irregular edges; in profile it is also irregular. Down the centre of the fragment, on one face only, is a large D shaped ridge. This ridge terminates at the base of the chape in a rounded knop like projection which has been heavily abraded. One o…

Copper alloy bow brooch of unusual form, probably of Late Hallstatt or early La Téne; Early Iron Age date (c. 700 - 400BC) The brooch is near-complete, missing the pin and has a length of 52.2mm and weighs 14.2g. At the rear of the head is a perforation of 2.4mm diameter; the perforation is aligned with the catch-plate and it is possible that the brooch was secured with a separate pin which travelled through the head and was lodged in the catch plate. Each side of the head there are two integral spherical knobs (6.5mm diameter), giving the head a width of 18.1mm. The bow is arch…

Cast copper alloy strap fitting, belt slide, of probable very late Iron Age or more likely an early Roman date (50 - 200AD). The strap fitting is broadly sub-rectangular in both plan and profile. It is cast in one piece. The front plate is decorated with a series of cast designs; these consist of a central raised rib with a centrally positioned circumferential groove dividing the ridge into two parts. Either side of this central rib the surface tapers and then expands to form two similar ridges at either edge of the strap fitting. Both these terminal ridges have similar grooves to thos…

From this pointed end a sub-rectangular shaped shank projects which terminates in a sub-spherical knop. The loop of the toggle and its cross section are irregular. Cast copper alloy bow brooch of probable late Iron Age or possible early Roman date (300 BC- 100 AD). The brooch is complete. The pin is held by a hinge which is attached to an axis bar. This bar is probably made of iron, due to the large amount of orange staining and corrosion product present around the head of the brooch. The axis bar is contained by semi-cylindrical cover that is formed from the upper part of the brooch being rolled / folded upon itself and hammer welded to the reverse face of the head. The pin is connected to the axis bar through a small slit in this cover. The he…
