Object type: STRAP END
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: County of Herefordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A cast copper alloy strap end. In plan the strap end is an elongated sub-oval. The strap end has decoration on the upper plate which has an abraded animal head terminal. Behind the head there is a single panel depicting an elongated triple stranded 'X' shape formed by to crescents back-to-back. These are linear and ribbed. In the fields around this 'X' shape there are further small blocks. In profile the strap end appears to be solid at the zoomorphic terminal, but then does divide into two plates, forming a slim 'Y' profile. This divided terminal is abraded, and there are the remains…

An incomplete fragment of cast copper alloy, possibly from a sleeve clasp of early medieval date (550-800 AD). The fragment is sub-rectangular in plan and cross section; it also has a series of irregular oval holes cast in it. The fragment is from the external edge of the clasp and the outer edge expands and contracts in an even wave along its edge. All the other edges are irregular and broken. There is no evidence of a cast design on any of the surfaces. The metal is a mid green colour with an even but heavily corroded polished patina, where the external patina is removed a mid purp…

Cast lead alloy early-medieval disc brooch with concentric circle decoration, of Weetch's Type 5. or 'nummular brooch' of possible later Early Medieval (Anglo-Saxon) date (probably 10th century AD). The brooch is mis-cast and incomplete due to an old break. Originally the brooch would have been circular, with a slightly convex front. The front is decorated with a series of concentric cast designs; at the centre of the brooch is a large raised boss with a central pellet, surrounding this is a circle formed from small pellets enclosed by a raised rib or ring. The outer edge is decorated…

Object type: STIRRUP
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: County of Herefordshire
Workflow stage: Published
A copper alloy stirrup terminal of 11th-century date, complete but worn and broken on its exterior edges. In plan the terminal is broadly sub-rectangular; it has a hollow reverse which would have enclosed the iron arm of the stirrup. In cross-section it is an irregular U shape. As the width expands, the fitting thickens until the terminal is solid and slightly bent over. The upper face has a series of three parallel transverse moulded ridges which form a stylised zoomorphic design. These can be interpreted as ears, eyes and a protruding snout. The underside of the terminal (the unders…
