A potential strap fitting, possibly dating to the late Iron Age, but could also be from the late Bronze Age.  The object is hollow, consisting of four sides: a top, bottom and two sides. The top is subrectangular in shapes, with convex outer edges. There are two sub-circular knobs on either side, and there is a central raised ridge. The bottom surface is thinner so the underside of the top surface is visible, also rectangular in shape with slightyl concave outer edges. The front of the object has a sub-circular hole (measuring 18.5mm wide and 7.5mm high)&…

An incomplete, copper alloy (bronze) spearhead of Middle Bronze Age date (1550-1250 BC). The object is made up of two fragments, but has a leaf-shaped blade in plan. Fragment 1. This fragment is triangular in plan, as a lozenge shaped cross section (particularly the central rib) and consists of the tip of the blade of the spearhead. The break at the bottom is uneven, with a lozenge shaped projection on one side. Whilst the majority of the surface has a brown patina, the break and some patches over the surface of the object has a lighter green patina. Dimensions. Length: 50.…

A copper alloy (bronze) palstave of Middle Bronze Age date, probably of the Acton Park II/Taunton metalwork style (c. 1400-1250 BC). The cutting edge has a crescentic form with the tips recurving back onto the expanding form of the blade, though one side is more pronounced than the other. The maximum heights of the flanges on both sides are taller than the stop ridge height, with the flanges forming a leaf-shaped pattern when viewed from above. The septum is U-shaped and is largely flat, though it tapers towards the butt. There is a casting pit on one side against the stop ridge. …

An incomplete cast copper alloy (Bronze) flat axe of Early Bronze Age date c. 2250-1900 BC. The axe is incomplete and only the cutting edge and lower blade survive, the butt and upper blade are lost due to an abraded but relatively recent break. It is very possibly that the other part is present in the field in which this was found. The condition of the axe is poor - small areas of a deep brown coloured surface patina are present but the majority has been removed by laminating corrosion. The tips of the blade and the cutting edge are also both abraded. The profile of the axe was proba…

An incomplete fragment of cast copper alloy, most likely all that remains of a Middle - Late Bronze Age (-1500--800 BC) rod like tool - most probably an awl. The fragment is rectangular in plan with a tapering point at one end and a blunt stub like end at the other. In cross section the fragment is oval at the tip and triangular in the lower body. It has been heavily eroded in the ploughsoil and the surface is heavily pitted and corroded. The surface is a mid -dark green colour with an irregular surface. The exact identification is hampered by the condition - but it is most likely to …

1, fragment of a Late Bronze Age socketed axe that consists of the blade and the base of the socket. The break is ancient and irregular with bubbles form the casting visible in the cross-section. The blade has a very low curved forward edge which is heavily corroded. Behind the blade the surface of the axe is in excellent condition with a dark green patina that has a series of shallow striation that run up from the blade on the top and bottom edge that are probably formed from use or sharpening. The casting seam is visible but has been filed down. The body is decorated with three hori…

An incomplete 'shafthole' adze of Bronze Age date - probably earlier Bronze Age date (2200-1500 BC). The implement is broadly a flat oval in profile and has a single perforation through the flat faces. The perforation has a hour glass profile charactersitic of having been pecked from both sides. It seems likely that this perforation is not central to the axe. The pebble has fractured across the perforation, and this half is broadly rectangular in plan with a rounded, tapered end. There are some heavily patinated chips in the end suggesting it may have been used as a hammer or mace. Th…

A copper alloy fragment of a Bronze Age artefact of uncertain classification dating to the period c. 1600-900 BC. The fragment may derive from a spear, rapier or dirk. The fragment is broadly rectangular in plan and has a triangular cross section. One face exhibits an old break which has removed a portion of the surface. The remaining section exhibits a longitudinal casting seam. The oppoiste face exhibits two parallel longitudinal casting seams. There is no blade edge remaining due to heavy damage. There is a green patina on the surface. The fragment measures 26.94mm in length, 21…

10:29 A heavily eroded fragment from the cutting tip of a chisel or wood working tool of probable prehistoric - later Bronze Age date (1800 - 750 BC). The fragment is very small being broadly rectangular in plan and wedge shaped / triangular in cross section. The cutting edge is lost but the surface is slightly curved. None of the surface patina survives and the fragment is heavily pitted and corroded. On the upper edge / break the surface is flat - and there is no evidence of the remains of a socket. A direct parallel has not been found - although it bares similarity to complete …

Bronze Age bronze butt fragment from an axe of uncertain type but of Developed Axe or Palstave form The axe is represented by a butt fragment only, broken at one end (with a surviving length of 32.4mm and a weight of 28.4g). The butt end is rounded but may be truncated and thins to an edge (with a width of 19.5mm and a thickness of 0.8mm). The sides are straight and slightly divergent to the break (with a maximum width of 21.9mm and a thickness of 7.7mm). The sides are convex across their thicknesses with the suggestion of a casting seam on the pitted surface. The flanges begin near t…
