Seven sherds representing 84% of the base from a cremation urn / burial vessel - most probably of Early - Middle Bronze Age date (2200-1800 BC). The seven sherds vary in size, thickness and weight but all have been broken due to disturbance in the ground through ploughing having crisp fresh unweathered or abraded edges. The fragments were gathered together by the farmer who noticed a white powdery spread in a recently improved / ploughed field suggesting that they were recovered shortly after disturbing the below ground archaeological context. It is probable that the ceramics represen…

An incomplete fragment most probably part of a copper alloy "Moustache-shaped" object probably of Middle Bronze Age to Middle Iron Age date (1500-300 BC). The artefact is heavily rolled resulting in abrasion to all surfaces. What remains is globular in form (teardrop shaped) with an oval cross section. It is probably one of a pair of pointed drop-shaped elements conjoined by an integrally cast bar. The remains of a heavily eroded rectangular bar is present on one side of the droplet. The external edges are all decorated with multiple longitudinal grooves The metal is a mid-green in co…

A fragment of highly leaded cast copper alloy of uncertain date. The fragment is undiagnostic being broadly rectangular in plan and triangular in section. The surface is a mid - light greenish grey colour and it is eroded in the ploughsoil. This type of artefact is not normally recorded, however it was recovered from close to the findspot of HESH-4E3374 and may hint at Late Bronze Age metalworking in the area. The fragment measures: 22.2mm length, 21.9mm width, is 5.7mm thick and weighs 6.00 grams

A cast copper alloy fragment of uncertain function and uncertain date (2000 BC - AD1500). The fragment is part of a larger item - it is semi-circular in plan and rectangular in profile. The exterior surface is heavily eroded and corroded and the original surface is now lost. It is a mid green colour with an abarded surface patina. Due to the size and thickness of this piece it seem most likely to be from the butt of an Early Bronze Age flat or flanged axe - most probably a Migdale type axe from the last phase of the Early Bronze Age (EBA III 2000 -1800 BC). A possible fragment from the upper socket / mouth of a cast copper alloy (bronze) socketed axe / axehead of Late Bronze Age date (c. 950-750 BC). These axes are considered to be part of the Ewart Park metalworking tradition (Metalworking phase XII) which corresponds to Needham's (1996) Period 6-7 circa 1000-700 CAL. BC. The fragment is miscast and relatively eroded; it represents a small area of the upper socket of an area below the moulded mouth / collar. It is irregular in plan and profile being broadly L shaped in cross section. There are no other features present, such as decor…

Late Bronze Age socketed axe fragment of uncertain type The axe fragment is a mouth fragment, probably from the unlooped side (with a surviving length of 35.4mm, a surviving width of 28.6mm, a surviving depth of 9.0mm and a weight of 19.0g). The top of the mouth (with a thickness of 5.4mm - 6.0mm) is corroded but a raised area is likely to represent the casting runner stub. The casting seam is evident running down the middle part of the side, from the runner stub and appears to have been prominent, possibly with minimal finishing. There is a weak collar discernible on the side (wit…

An incomplete, copper alloy (bronze) socketed axehead dating to the Ewart Park phase of the late Bronze Age date (c. 950-800 BC). The mouth is sub-rectangular (48.16mm high, 39.41mm wide) with a sub-rectangular socket (33.68mm high, 28.69mm wide). There is a slight lip around the edge. There are three longitudinal ribs, spaced evenly on both faces and tapering towards the breaks on both sides. There is a D-shaped loop just below the socket on one side. A casting seam is visible on both sides. There is a break in the object, with it being more of an oblique line on one face and mo…

Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: County of Herefordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A cast copper alloy ring of probable later prehistoric date - Late Bronze Age or Iron Age date (1000 – 300 BC). There is some debate as to the function of these decorated rings, in that some have been described as personal ornaments associated with articles of dress whilst others have described them as being associated with harness fittings. The ring is complete and is circular in plan and sub-oval (lentoid) in cross section. It measures 31.2mm in diameter, is 7.6mm wide, and is 5.5mm thick. The internal hole has a diameter of 16.4mm. The ring weighs 14.55 grams. Both faces o…

A gold band with a narrow tang/fastening hook at one end and blunt rounded terminal at one end (with a roughly pierced hole to receive the fastening hook). Both sides of the ornament are folded over to create an overall [ shape (similar to other objects of this date and style, cf. the Binstead 'rings', discussed below). The object has been distorted and crumpled. It is not clear whether the damage occurred before or after deposition, but the latter is probable given the lack of clear or intentional breakage. Dimensions: In its current state the object has dimensions of 30mm …

Cast copper alloy ring of unknown date probably of later prehistoric Late Bronze Age or Iron Age date (1000 BC – 50 AD), however there is some possibility that it may date from the Roman period (50 – 410 AD). The ring is complete and is sub circular in plan and sub circular in cross section. It measures 39.91mm in diameter, is 8.33mm wide, and is 7.98mm thick. The internal hole has a diameter of 25.08mm. The ring weighs 31.16 grams. The ring is a mid brown colour with a well developed and heavily polished patina which covers all surfaces. There is no obv…

Object type: PERFORATED OBJECT
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: County of Herefordshire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
An incomplete 'shafthole' adze of Bronze Age date - probably earlier Bronze Age date (2200-1500 BC). The implement is broadly a flat oval in profile and has a single perforation through the flat faces. The perforation has a hour glass profile charactersitic of having been pecked from both sides. It seems likely that this perforation is not central to the axe. The pebble has fractured across the perforation, and this half is broadly rectangular in plan with a rounded, tapered end. There are some heavily patinated chips in the end suggesting it may have been used as a hammer or mace. Th…
