Object type: THUMB NAIL SCRAPER
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: County of Herefordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A thumbnail scraper of later Neolithic or Early Bronze Age date (2300 -1800BC). The scraper is formed on tertiary debitage / waste flake of coarse grained chert. The ventral face shows some conchoidal ripples and the base of the bulb of percussion but striking platform etc. has been removed by snapping. The dorsal face has several removals / flake facets. These are most dense around the edge where a series of neat regular well applied secondary retouch can be seen. This has been well applied and forms a slightly serrated cutting / scraping edge. Little or no retouch is applied to the …

Flint thumbnail scraper of later Neolithic or Early Bronze Age date (2300 -1800BC). The scraper is formed on a tertiary piece of debitage / waste flake which is a mottled grey brown colour. The ventral face shows some conchoidal ripples and the base of the bulb of percussion but striking platform etc. has been removed by snapping. The dorsal face has multiple and layered series of flake facets. These are most dense around the edge where a series of neat regular well applied secondary retouch can be seen. Object type: AXEHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: County of Herefordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Possible polished axe-head or model of an axe-head of later Neolithic (2900-2100 BC). There is a great amount of debate in the identification of this artefact. In shape and form it is very similar to known polished axes of the Neolithic period; however, it is formed from local fine grained mud / sandstone and is maybe better described as a naturally occurring axe-shaped nodule. The stone is too soft for tool production, hence a third and rather tenuous alternative interpretation as a potential model, in that it looks and would have acted as an axe in every way apart from being functio…

Object type: FABRICATOR
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: County of Herefordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A fabricator of uncertain date but most probably from the late Neolithic or Early Bronze Age date. The fabricator is formed on a triangular sectioned rod of knapped flint - which is a mid-reddish browne in colour with two very small areas of off white chalk derived cortex. The ventral face shows clear conchoidal ripples however the striking platform and bulb of concussion are lost. Both long edges of the dorsal face have been retouched and both exhibit significant ground pressure damage on the cutting edge from use.
Dr Kevin Leahy states 'fabricators are difficult to date and a w…

A fabricator of uncertain date but most probably from the late Neolithic or Early Bronze Age date. The fabricator is formed on a triangular sectioned rod of knapped flint - which is a mid-grey colour with an area of off white chalk derived cortex on one area - this cortex could also act as a textured holding point which would aid grip during use. The ventral face shows clear conchoidal ripples and a small striking platform is present on the distal terminal of the ventral face. Both long edges of the dorsal face have been retouched and both exhibit significant ground pressure damage on…

Five (5) thumbnail scrapers of later Neolithic or Early Bronze Age date (2300 -1800BC). The scrapers vary in colour from mid grey to pale brown. All are formed on D shaped flakes with high D shaped cross sections. Many of the scrapers dorsal faces have several broad removals / flake facets most probably caused by other flakes being removed for tool production. Several of the upper dorsal faces have retouch best described as long and covering pressure flaking. Around the exterior edges of all the scrapers are areas of dense neat regular well applied secondary retouch . This has been we…

Five abraded tertiary debitage waste flakes struck from prepared cores of Neolithic date (4000-2000 BC). All the flakes are broadly a rectangular shape in plan have various opposing removals on the upper dorsal faces. Likewise all flakes have retouch applied to the one surviving original long edge on the dorsal face only; here it creates a serrated cutting edge: this retouch in all cases is best described as short, sub-parallel and semi-abrupt. The extent and competency of this retouch varies. The flint colour varies from a white through to a mid-grey or black

A single reused tertiary waste flake struck from a prepared core of later Mesolithic or more probably earlier Neolithic date (4000-2000 BC). The flake has been struck and retouched in multiple directions. Two distinct points / awls have been formed on two of the four corners. Both corners share similar pointed triangular shaped wedges most probably partially formed / created with burin like removal flakes. The majority of the retouch to form the boring point is neat and well formed being best described as short, sub-parallel or scaled and either abrupt or semi-abrupt. Importantly one …

A possible Levalloisian core flake / blade of most probable Neolithic date. The blade is rectangular in plan with a lenticular cross-section. The lower edge is broken - most probably in antiquity as the whole flint has the same mid-grey coloured milky surface patina. The flaking appears intentionally to have shaped the flint while still on the original core, creating a distinctive 'tortoise shell' flaking, typical of Levallois flint technology. The ventral face shows a prominent bulb of percussion indicating probable use of a hard hammer, likewise the striking platform is well prepare…

A near complete axe head formed of a coarse grained igneous rock dating from the later Neolithic date (3000-2000 BC). The axe has been knapped and pecked into shape although the surface is heavily weathered. The rock from which it is made has a buff brown coloured patina. A small removal on the cutting edge reveals a much darker charcoal grey coloured fine grained igneous stone beneath. There is considerable mid pink brown staining across the body of the axe and this maybe as a result of the burial environment which is commensurate with the red colour of Herefordshire soil which are i…

Eight (8) flakes of secondary flint waste / debitage of Neolithic date (3500-2100 BC). All of the flakes are from secondary phase of working / flaking and are a direct result of preparation of flint tools. Most show clear signs of direct hard hammer knapping and the majority have been removed with minimal loss of flint from the nodule / core. The cortex is all mid grey in colour and the majority is chalk derived. The majority of the flint is a light grey through to black colour, although some pieces have milky white surface patina.

Two flakes of debitage reused as scrapers of probable later Neolithic date (2900-2300 BC). The two flakes are both waste flakes struck from different flint nodules. The have been reworked along their long edges to form relatively crude but effective scrapers. Both are broadly oval in shape exhibiting multiple flake facets on the dorsal face and conchoidal ripples / bulbar scars on the ventral. Direct and indirect percussion has been used to rework the edges.
