A fragment from the rim of a cast and turned leaded copper alloy vessel, most probably dating to the Medieval period. Given the thickness and the weight of the fragment it is most likely to be from a small domestic mortar like vessel. None of the surfaces are decorated but all have several scratches and abrasions. Given the small size of the fragment an estimate of vessel size is not possible - however it is likely to be fairly large (having a diameter in excess of 20cm) The fragmnent measures: 7.86mm thick, 64.28mm in length, 23.59mm in width and weigh 43.2 grams

A fragment of a snapped knapped flint knife blade of later Neolithic or early Bronze Age date. The knife is formed from a relatively narrow blade of mid grey coloured flint. It is extensively worked on both the ventral and dorsal faces. In plan the knife fragment is broadly rectangular in shape and in cross section it is a similar sub-oval shape. The working reworking and retouch on the dorsal face is detailed and well applied; it is most heavily applied around the edges with small rounded regular flakes being removed; this flaking is very compact and neat being achieved with great sk…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Lead alloy casting waste of uncertain date; most probably post medieval (1500-1800 AD). This fragment is from the neck (funnel / well) of a composite, probably two part, mould. The casting waste is conical; being oval in plan and D shaped in cross section. In profile the edges of the waste taper relatively evenly. This conical well descends into a rectangular runner which has been clipped at the junction of the well. The fragment is heavily abraded and so evidence of casting seams are lost. The casting waste is a grey colour. Casting waste is very hard to date in isolation but the pat…

A copper alloy cast vessel leg / pot-leg, probably from a tripod cooking vessel, of post-medieval date. A wide but tentative date of AD 1200-1600 can be given. The object consists of an almost complete pot leg with a sub conical shape, with a pronounced leg beneath. There is some swelling at the foot, although this is not clearly defined due to erosion and corrosion. The leg is not decorated and likely from a crude domestic vessel. The object has a length of 19.39mm, a width of 17.04mm and height of 22.02mm; it weighs 12.78 grams.

Rim sherd of a thick walled earthen ware vessel of probable late medieval date (1350-1500). This sherd is relatively large and thick. It probably comes from the neck of a large storage jar or possibly a jug / flagon. The fabric is relatively soft with a number of angular and sub-angular quartz, grit, iron stone and broken burnt pottery inclusions. The fabric colour is two-tone, the outer a mid orange oxidised and the inner (core) a mid grey. This two-tone effect has been caused by low temperatures within the kiln and is typical of early pottery. The outer surface of the vessel seems s…

It is likely to be from the rim of a large dish, bowl, or cooking vessel. The vessel fragment is a mid-green colour with a polished patina which survives well on all surfaces. The underside is heavily 'brushed' but patinated suggesting that this occurred in antiquity. Due to the size of the fragment a projected diameter cannot be suggested. The fragment measures 48.1mm wide, 40.0mm high, is …
