Struck flint 'thumbnail' scraper of later Neolithic or Early Bronze Age date (2900-1800 BC). The scraper is broadly oval in shape being formed from a relatively thick piece of flint; it is oval in cross section. It is likely that the flint represents reuse of debitage (waste flakes from tool making). The upper dorsal face of the scraper exhibits a large number of flake scars suggesting that this piece has been heavily worked / reworked. The ventral face is relatively flat with a series of parallel flake facets showing conchoidal ripples. The edges of the dorsal face have all be retouc…

Scraper possible a discoidal knife, reworked from a fragment of a flaked Neolithic (2900 -2100 BC) axehead. The axehead was created from a large piece of black coloured chert. Chert is a very similar rock to flint, in that it is silica based and flakes in a controlled manner. However, chert has a courser material matrix than flint and more skill is needed to knap it successfully.
The tool is broadly sub-rectangular (rectangular with rounded corners) in plan and oval (slightly D shaped) in cross section. It probably comprised the upper part of the blade and cutting edge of the axe. …

A flint scraper formed on a piece of secondary debitage / waste flake (from the second phase of tool making). The tool dates from the later Neolithic or possibly the Early Bronze Age periods (2900-2100 BC) and is formed from a squat rectangular flake of relatively high quality flint. In profile and in cross section it is D shaped. The ventral face shows conchoidal ripples a point and bulb of percussion . The dorsal face has a number of irregular and regular flake scars - as well as a single large area of cortex. The edges have been retouched with short sub-parallel semi-abrupt retouch…

A square shaped wedge of reworked flint - most probably a scraper of probable Neolithic date. The scraper is formed on a snapped blade like flake which is a faceted D shape in cross section. The dorsal face has a series of neat angular retouch around three sides; this retouch is best described as short, parallel semi-abrupt. The edges of the ventral face have also been retouched with less neat and more irregular flake facets. The flint is a dark black colour with no cortex present. In shape the flint is very similar to gun-flints of the 17th and 18th centuries; however the application…

Small flint waste flake / debitage probably dating from the Neolithic period (2900 - 2100 BC). The flake is broadly oval in both plan and D shaped in profile. It has number of regular facets caused by flaking and also plough-damage on the upper (dorsal) face of the flake. The lower (ventral) face has very little evidence of flaking. It does however show evidence of conchoidal fractures suggesting that the bulb of percussion has been removed by later flaking. There is a small area of cortex (the rough outer skin of the flint nodule) present on the dorsal face. This suggests that this fl…

A large knapped and flaked flint scraper of later Neolithic date (3000-2000BC). The scraper is unusual as it is formed from a large piece / flake of primary debitage. It seems to have been formed crudely and possibly discarded relatively swiftly; this is unusual in an area which has very small natural reserves of flint. The scraper / knife is broadly oval in plan and irregular in cross section. The ventral face suggests that it was struck using an uncontrolled blow which shattered the rock. It is possible this primary damage may actually have been natural and then the flakje has been …

A large substantial backed knife of later Mesolithic or Neolithic date (6500-2000 BC). The knife is formed on a a broad tertiary blade with a distinct baked ridge on the dorsal face created by removals of previous blades. The distall end of the ventral face has a clear bulbar scar and bulb of percussion however the prepared striking platform has been removed by snapping and retouch. The long edges of both sides of the dorsal face have been retouched with acceptional care and skill. The retouch can be catagorised as being short scaled semi-abrupt. The blunted end / nose is likewise ret…

A fragment of knapped flint knife - or possibly a reworked projectile point of later Neolithic or Early Bronze Age date (2900 BC - 1800 BC). The flint is sub-triangular in plan and an irregular trapezoid in cross section. The flint has been worked from a larger flake and the ventral face shows evidence of conchoidal ripples. The two long edges of the dorsal face show evidence of significant retouch which has been applied through pressure flaking; these have created a neat serrated edge. The lower short edge has several areas of vertical knapping on the butt suggesting it has been del…

A broken pointed end of a finely worked bifacial tool of translucent brown flint with light and mid grey inclusions. It has been totally invasively worked. The plan is a pointed symmetrical leaf shape, very much like a leaf arrow head but for a somewhat thicker section. Close to the slightly oblique break the sharp margin has been slightly blunted which suggests that the tool was a kind of knife.
The implement is 30.9mm in length, 33.35mm wide, 8.3mm thick and weighs 8.4 grams

Small flint flake of probable Neolithic date (3500 - 2100 BC). The flake is irregular in plan and sub-triangular in cross section. The bulb of percussion on the reverse of the flake is complete and there is evidence of a number of hinge fractures on the opposite (front) surface. It is likely that this flake was a by-product (or waste flake / debitage) of tool making as there is a small amount of cortex (rough outer skin of the flint nodule) on the artefact. This area cortex covers less than 15% of the total surface area suggesting that this flake was produced during the second phase of…

It is likely that this flake was a by-product (or waste flake / debitage) of tool making; if this is the case then it must have been once all the cortex had been removed (tertiary / third phase of tool making) as there is no evidence for cortex on the flint. This waste flake has then been re-used or utilised to form a scraper like tool. The evidence for this is the secondary flaking or retouch along …
