This rock type is formed from compressed volcanic ash and has a fine grained composition with infrequent crystalline inclusions. A flint flake with no evidence of ‘re-touch’ along any edge. There is a clear bulb of percussion with corresponding ripples down the length of the piece on the ventral side. The dorsal surface is covered by negative scars, hackles and ridges. While not officially a blade as its length is not quite twice its width, it could have been used as a blade. The axe is knapped from a mid orange coloured flint with considerable mid - pale yellow and milky white inclusions. This axe is broadly sub-rectangular in plan and sub-oval (humped) in cross section. In plan the sides of the axe taper from the widest point at the cutting edge to a relatively narrow rounded butt. One long edge tapers more than the other edge. There is no evidence of any reworking . The dorsal face has several flake removal scars in multiple directions.The flint is a mid white colour and the flake has been burnt in a fire. Prehistoric flint knife, probably of Neolithic date The knife is of sub-triangular form and is incomplete, missing part of the retouched edge (with a length of 47.5mm, a width of 36.4mm, a thickness of 10.7mm and a weight of 16.8g). The retouch was confined to one edge and only survives on the distal end, abutting the cortex. The opposite edge may have been deliberately backed. Cortex is present on the distal side and there is a recessed flaw on the ventral surface. The flint has light patination.
