Object type: THUMB NAIL SCRAPER
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: County of Herefordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Flint thumbnail (side and end) scraper of later Neolithic or Early Bronze Age date (2300 -1800BC). The scraper is formed from a grey colour piece of flint with a relatively uniform matrix. It is created from a tertiary flake (due to the size of the scraper this may originally be debitage). The ventral face shows clear evidence of the bulb of percussion and conchoidal fractures. The bulb has been trimmed by flaking and an area of modern damage can be seen on one of the worked edges. The dorsal face has a series of flake facets, where flakes have been removed to thin the thickness of the…

Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: County of Herefordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Struck flint scraper of later Neolithic or Early Bronze Age date (2900-1800 BC). The scraper is broadly oval in shape being formed from a relatively thick piece of flint; it is oval in cross section. The upper dorsal face of the scraper exhibits a large number of flake scars suggesting that this piece has been heavily worked / reworked. The ventral face is flat with a series of conchoidal ripples and the rimmed remains of the bulb of percussion. The striking platform has been reworked. The edges of the dorsal face have all be retouched with indirect percussion, all the flakes relativel…

Object type: ARROWHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: County of Herefordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A late Neolithic arrowhead probably of oblique or hollow-based type. There is bifacial invasive retouch down the left lateral edge (when held with dorsal side facing). The base appears to have been slightly hollowed with retouch to form very slight barbs. Some cortex remains on the dorsal surface. The flint is pale to dark grey with the cortex a sandy colour.
The arrowhead measures 28.14 mm in length and tapers in width from 20.5 mm at the base to 2.4 mm at the point. It is lozengiform in section and is 5.1 mm thick.
It resembles an example of an oblique arrowhead illustrated i…

Flint ‘horse-shoe’ or disc style scraper dating from the later Neolithic period (2500 - 2100 BC). The scraper is formed on a flake which is broadly sub-rectangular in plan and cross section. The flake has a clear striking platform and there is a bulb of percussion present on the ventral (lower) face; the dorsal (upper) face has a series of rectangular flake scars. It is possible that the flake is a bi-product of tool making, in that it formed from a waste flake from the final or tertiary phase of tool making as there is no cortex (the outer skin of a flint nodule) present. All four…

Object type: DEBITAGE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: County of Herefordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Small flint waste flake / debitage probably dating from the Neolithic period (3500 - 2100 BC). The flake is irregular in both plan and profile. It has a number of facets (caused by flaking) on the dorsal face and a bulb of percussion on the rear of the ventral. There is a small area of cortex (rough outer skin of the flint nodule) present which suggests that this flake comes from the secondary phase of tool production. There is no evidence of secondary reworking on any of the edges which suggests that it has not been utilised as a tool (such as a scraper). The flint is a mid grey white…

Small flint waste flake / debitage probably dating from the Neolithic period (3500 - 2100 BC). The flake is irregular in both plan and profile. It has a very large number of regular facets (caused by flaking) on the upper face of the flake. These flake scars are small neat and very regular - being similar to the ripple flaking present on arrowheads and other artefacts of the later part of this period. There are no areas of cortex (the rough outer skin of the flint nodule) present anywhere on the piece of debitage. This suggests that this flake comes from the final or tertiary phase of…

Reworked flint flake / debitage probably dating from the Neolithic period (3500 – 2100 BC). The flake is irregular in both plan (broadly T shaped) and profile. The bulb of percussion is complete on the reverse and shows that he flake has been removed with a transverse blow. The flake is likely to have been produced in the secondary phase of working as a small area of cortex (the outer rind like skin of the nodule) is present along one edge. The reason for removing this flake from the original tool is likely to be due to a flaw in the flint which has resulted in an area of hinge fract…

Flint ‘thumbnail’ scraper of probable Late Neolithic or Early Bronze Age date (2500 - 1500 BC). The flint flake is broad and squat being oval in plan and sub-rectangular in cross section. It measures 21.2mm length, 24.9mm width, is 7.6mm thick and weighs 4.08 grams. The flint flake is not well preserved and the bulb of percussion on the reverse face cannot be identified. Evidence for retouch or secondary working can be seen on the front end / edge of the flake; these facets are small neat and regular. Other evidence of secondary working cannot be seen. Both faces of the tool have i…

Object type: AXE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: County of Herefordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A complete, but damaged, knapped (?), and ground axe head of probable later Neolithic date (2900-2100 BC). The axe is knapped from a mid brownish green black igneous rock, possibly a Gabbro. This rock could be knapped in a similar way to flint to form tools. However, the composition of the rock which forms the axe head is different to that of the majority of stone axe heads from the period. The axe head also has a thin seam of softer material probably a pyroxene inclusion. Pyroxene is common as an inclusion in many igneous rocks but is not often found in stone axe heads. The presence o…

Scraper possible a discoidal knife, reworked from a fragment of a flaked Neolithic (2900 -2100 BC) axehead. The axehead was created from a large piece of black coloured chert. Chert is a very similar rock to flint, in that it is silica based and flakes in a controlled manner. However, chert has a courser material matrix than flint and more skill is needed to knap it successfully.
The tool is broadly sub-rectangular (rectangular with rounded corners) in plan and oval (slightly D shaped) in cross section. It probably comprised the upper part of the blade and cutting edge of the axe. …
