Three pieces of tertiary debitage from flint knapping - most probably of late Mesolithic or Neolithic date. All three pieces are crested and knapped in one direction. There is no sign of retouch. In all cases the flint is a mid-grey - white colour. 1. 23.3mm length, 14.8mm width, 5.6mm thick and weighs 1.53 grams 2. 12.3mm length, 9.6mm width, 3.4mm thick and weighs 0.39 grams 3. 11.3mm length, 9.3mm width, 2.6mm thick and weighs 0.28 grams

Neolithic to early Bronze Age (c. 4000 to 1000BC) debitage: The flake is a secondary flake with a large striking platform. The dorsal surface which has three vertical scars removed, and the ventral surface has a bulb of percussion with faint conchoidal scars. The flake is knapped from flint which is a mottled mid grey and have the start of a patina. It measures 24.31mm long, 30.75mm wide, 6.84mm thick and weighing 5.32g. The flake probably dates to the Neolithic or early Bronze Age periods, c. 4000 to 1000BC.

Mesolithic to Neolithic (c. 7000 to 2350BC) debitage: A blade knapped from flint. The flake is triangular in section. The dorsal surface has two vertical scars and the ventral surface has traces of conchoidal ripples and a small bulb of percussion. The surface has a white patina which has a dark grey flint. It measures 25.74mm long, 9.83mm wide, 3.79mm thick and weighing 0.95g. The blade probably dates to the Mesolithic to Neolithic periods, c. 7000 to 2350BC.

Mesolithic to Neolithic (c. 7000 to 2350BC) debitage: A blade knapped from flint. The blade is trapezoidal in section. The dorsal surface has three vertical scars and the ventral surface has traces of conchoidal ripples. The proximal end is missing, but the patina which covers the surface also covers the break. One on lateral edge there is a small portion of damage rather than re-touch revealing a dark grey flint. It measures 31.88mm long, 14.11mm wide, 3.39mm thick and weighing 2.17g. The blade probably dates to the Mesolithic to Neolithic periods, c. 7000 to 2350BC.

Probable Mesolithic to early Bronze Age (8000 - 1000BC) retouched flake: The flint flake is knapped from a brown flint which has a strap of grey patina on the side edge. The ventral surface has a large bulb or percussion and slight conchoidal ripples. The dorsal surface has a negative scar. The distal end has a small curved notch which has been formed by re-touch. The flake measures 18.66mm long, 23.56mm wide, 6.25mm thick and weighs 2.33g. Retouched flakes are difficult to date as they are present throughout prehistory. Thus, a wide date range for this piece is suggested.

A scraper formed on a large and irregular waste flake / secondary debitage dating from the Neolithic Period (3500 -2100BC). The flake is large and irregular being formed from relatively good flint, in plan it is sub-triangular whilst in section it is rectangular. Along one edges is an area of coarse external cortex; this would suggest that the flake has been formed from secondary waste / debitage. The flake is knapped from flint which is a mottled mid grey. It measures 13.17mm long, 20.63mm wide, 5.47mm thick and weighing 1.47g. The flake probably dates to the Neolithic or early Bronze Age periods, c. 4000 to 1000BC.

Eardisland History and Heritage Group Site Code: HLF 07 Site Summary: Finds made during the excavation of two trenches placed across parallel linear cropmarks. The cropmarks are approximately 60m long and 4m apart. The trenches were dug on cultivated land and excavated to the natural sub-strata. Trench A East Ditch Context 044 Irregular flake of flint which has been burnt. It is possible that it represents debitage but it is too small and damaged to analyse Length 12.6mm Width 9.9mm, Thickness 2.2mm, Weight 0.28 grams
