Details of follow-up excavation of findspot by P. Reavill (from PAS record)

"It looks as if the hoard was placed within a single hole which was dug through the top and sub soil and placed near to the junction with the underlying natural (which was very gravely). It looks as if the deposition of the hoard occurred swiftly - as there was little / no differentiation between the fill and surrounding soil.

· A cut could be seen at the level of the coins and it is likely that the original pit was truncated by the detectorists initial excavation.

· The hoard was placed within either one or possibly two organic bags which has rotted / decomposed - many of the coins are in small stacks - and the ones which are around the edge are lying on their sides. The fact that the coins are in stacks could suggest that there was some structure / care to the deposition. A bag /sack seems more likely for 2 reasons

a) the space between the coin deposit and edge of cut

b) the fact that the coins seem to be moulded into an amorphous shape

· Once the bag had been deposited within the hole - 2 small stones / pebbles were placed directly on top. One of these was removed by the detectorists whilst the second was in situ and lifted as part of the excavation - both stones had copper corrosion encrusted on their lower edges. Both stones also look to be the local limestone.

· There was very little / no evidence of any other archaeological activity on site. A small piece of possible heavily abraded Roman Severn valley pot was recovered from the ploughsoil during the excavation and the detectorists have reported no other finds within the field (apart from relatively modern coin (George III and Victoria) and buttons."

"datefound1":"2013-07-24T23:00:00Z
West Midlands
c.50 loose coins and concreted mass weighing 1.8kg · The hoard probably consists of c. 400 ish coins which have corroded into a single concreted mass - the single block weighs approximately 2 kilos and there are another c. 50 loose coins.
