A lead alloy weight or token of Medieval to Post Medieval date (c. AD 1400-1800). The object is circular in plan and rectangular in cross-section. It has a relatively uniform thickness and there is no extant decoration on either the obverse or the reverse. There are the possible remnants of a central pellet on the obverse, since there is a slightly circular raised section in the centre that shows signs of breakage in the past, however, there does not appear to be any strong evidence to suggest it was an intentionally moulded pellet rather than an accidental product of casting. The dis…

It starts at 17.99mm long and 16.09mm wide at the base, tapering to 12.85mm long and 10.74mm wide near the top. At this point, it narrows rapidly to 5.56mm wide whilst remaining 12.35mm long and forms a rounded lug that is roughly rectilinear at one end and rounded at the top. There is a circular perforation (2.26mm diameter) in the rounded lug. There are assorted indentations on the surface of the weight, most notably a su…

The weight was originally circular but now semi-circular being broken (possibly cut) in half. It is rectangular in cross section. The upper face of the disc is decorated with incised concentric rings which have been cut over with deep knife scores. The reverse face was originally flat and plain however a number of deep grooves have been cut into the reverse with a knife. The weight is a light grey colour with a powdery uneven and corroded patina that covers all surfaces. A light…

Cast lead or lead alloy weight (possibly apothecaries' weight) of probable later Medieval or Post Medieval date (1350 - 1700). The weight is sub-rectangular in plan and profile; each edge is faceted / bevelled. The upper surface of the weight is decorated with seven cast raised pellets arranged symmetrically with two rows of three and a further pellet positioned centrally between them. The reverse face is relatively flat with a slight depression at the centre - this depression is corroded but it could contain a heart shaped stamp contained within a beaded border. The weight is a mid g

Cast lead or lead alloy weight of probable later Medieval or Post Medieval date (1350 - 1650). The weight is broadly circular in plan and rectangular in cross section. The edges around the front face are faceted; one side is damaged due to an old and heavily abraded break. The design on the front consists of a concentric pattern with an irregular star formed from a vertical and saltire cross placed at the centre. This is enclosed by a single raised ring which in turn is enclosed by a further ring with a series of irregular triangles on its inner edge (forming a tooth like pattern). T…

Cast lead or lead alloy weight (or possibly a very thick token) of probable late Medieval or Post Medieval date (1350 - 1650). The weight is circular in plan and D shaped in cross section. The edges around the front face are faceted; the design on the front consists of high relief cast ribs and pellets. These forms the initial I b or possibly 91 depending on direction of orientation. The lines are all pellet terminalled and there are two pellets in the field, one below the 9 (or above the b) and one after the 1 (or before the I). The reverse face is plain and undecorated. The weight i…

Cast lead alloy weight, or possible spindle whorl of unknown date probably later medieval 1300-1600 AD. The weight is sub-circular in plan and D shaped in profile; in cross section it is an irregular rectangle. Through the centre is a sub-circular hole (diameter: 8.7mm). There is no sign of decoration and the ring is a mid grey colour with an even, but powdery corrosion. Similar weights have been dated to both the Roman and the Medieval periods however it is most likely that this is of medieval date, probably for use as a net or line weight. The weight measures 24.9mm diameter, is 1…
