Cast copper alloy weight of post-medieval date (1588-1603). The weight is part of a larger group of stacking weights, having a wide and relatively thick raised edge on the upper face. It measures 4.4mm thick, diameter of 36.6mm and weighs 24.9 grams (0.88 ozs or 384.6 grains). The front and rear faces both have turned circles around a central hollow point; all of these concentric circles are regular and well formed. At the centre of the front face is a damaged image which is within a circle and adjacent, outside the circle is a crudely stamped / punched sword. Below this is a ewer sta…

Cast lead or lead alloy weight of probable medieval date (1300 - 1550). The weight is sub-circular (formed from eight uneven and irregular facets / faces) in plan and sub-triangular (conical) in profile. Through the centre of the weight is a cast conical hole. The purpose of this hole is uncertain but it might have had a length of wire or string to allow it to be suspended, this would aid safe-keeping and storage. The weight measures 22.41mm in length, 20.74mm width and is 21.77mm high. It weighs 60.1 grams. The weight undecorated. It is a mid grey colour with an even patina that co…

A cast lead alloy circular ball (similar in size and shape to a musket ball) of probable post medieval 1600-1800 date. The ball has a circular shaped hole through its mid point (5.19mm in diameter) and has no sign of decoration, casting seam or casting spur. It is a light grey colour with a relatively thick surface patina. It is highly unlikely that the ball is from shot and instead is suggested to be from a line or net weight. Cast lead or lead alloy weight of probable later Medieval or Post Medieval date (1350 - 1650). The weight is broadly circular in plan and rectangular in cross section. The edges around the front face are faceted; one side is damaged due to an old and heavily abraded break. The design on the front consists of a concentric pattern with an irregular star formed from a vertical and saltire cross placed at the centre. This is enclosed by a single raised ring which in turn is enclosed by a further ring with a series of irregular triangles on its inner edge (forming a tooth like pattern). T…

A complete, cast lead alloy, weight of post medieval date. The weight is flat and broadly circular in plan. It has an abraded , irregular rim, which is most prominent on the top side. The irregular nature of the rim is probably due to movement in the plough soil. On both sides of the weight is a central indentation. The only markings are four irregularly spaced, incised ringlets on one half of the top side. The weight has a yellow grey patina all over. The maximum diameter of the weight is 30.5mm, and its maximum thickness, at the rim, is 5.4mm. It weighs 23.95g ( 0.845oz).

Cast lead or lead alloy weight of probable medieval or post medieval date (1300 - 1800). The weight is sub-circular in plan and sub-triangular (conical) in cross section. There is no suspension loop. The weight is a mid-grey colour with an even patina that covers all surfaces. It has been marked and abraded in the soil; this has caused the weight to become asymmetrical. Similar standing weights have been dated to the medieval and post medieval periods. It is likely that the weight would have been used as a trade weight weighing four ounces - 1/4 lb. The weight measures 31.0mm wide,…

Possible cast lead or lead alloy weight of probable Medieval date (1300 - 1550). The weight is irregular in plan being a wasted cylindrical shape (dumb bell) with faceted sides. Both terminals are relatively flat and the weight can easily be stood and balanced on either end. The weight is undecorated although it does have a number of deeply incised lines on either terminal.
