A Post Medieval cast copper alloy weight dating to circa (AD 1625 - 1649). The weight is circular in plan. The upper surface has a lipped rim and two fine low-relief concentric rings in the centre. Within the concentric rings is a centrally placed circular incision. At the centre of the front face of the weight there is a circular indentation which is where the maker would have shaved the weight to make it the correct weight. At the 6 o'clock position there is the Founders Company mark of a ewer which was stamped on approved weights. At the 11 o'clock position there is the royal cipher, a 'C' which is surmounted by a crown. The 'C' represents Charles I. At 12 0'clock there is a dagger, which represents the sword of St. Paul. And at 1 o'clock there is an 'A' for Averdepois. The reverse face has a central incision and concentric rings across the surface, this is also possible evidence of the weight being manipulated to gain the correct measure. The surface of the weight has a well-developed light to mid green patina. The royal cipher of Charles I dates this weight to 1625 to 1649. Biggs (1993: p.51) illustrates a Charles I lead weight with the crowned C and sword of St Paul that represents London. A similar example can be seen on the database discovered in Coddington, Herefordshire (WAW-BA2A82)
The weight measures 40.3mm diameter and 5.9mm thick, weighing 51.6 grams.

A cast lead alloy circular weight of probable later medieval or more likely post medieval date (1350-1800). The weight is circular in plan and D shaped in cross section. The edges of the weight have thin circumferential incised lines around them. The upper face is domed and possibly originally had a cast design - now lost through corrosion and abrasion. The reverse face is undecorated and has a central depression. The weight is a mid grey colour and has an abraded and corroded patina. A direct parallel has not been found but a 17th / 18th century date is preferred.
The weight measures 32.4mm diameter and is 12.7mm thick; it weighs 73.4 grams (2.5 ozs)

Cast lead or lead alloy 'steelyard' weight of probable Roman date (AD 100-400) or possible Medieval (1200-1500 ) date. The weight is sub-circular in plan and sub-triangular shaped (conical) in cross section. There is no evidence of cast or applied decoration. A well preserved iron rod fixing loop is present extending from the upper edge of the weight. The hole through the top of the weight is very small / narrow (diameter 2.8mm). The underside of the weight has a rounded base. The weight is a mid grey cream colour with a relatively even, but slightly corroded and abraded, patina that covers all surfaces. A direct parallel for this weight has not been found - it weighs a fraction over 1/4 an imperial pound which could suggest a medieval date.
The weight measures 18.4mm length and is 19.2mm wide, the weight rises to 71.0mm high. The iron rod projects 6.6mm above the weight and measures 6.0mm x2.6mm; the wire is 2.3mm thick. The weight weighs 122.6 grams.

Cast lead or lead alloy weight of probable medieval date (1300 - 1550). The weight is sub-cylindrical being oval in plan and cross section. A single cast hole extends through the middle of the weight and a copper alloy wire (diameter 2.2mm) is fixed into it; it is likely that this was used to suspend the weight and aided safe-keeping and storage. The weight is undecorated although the external surface is covered in knife marks and cuts. It is a mid grey colour with an abraded and corroded patina that covers all surfaces. Similar weights have been dated to both the Roman and the medieval periods. The context of this find would suggest the later.
The weight measures 55.2mm in high, 32.4mm width and is 30.2mm thick. It weighs 323 grams or 11 1/4 ozs. As such it may have been used as a 12 oz or 3/4 lb weight.

A complete, cast lead alloy, weight of post medieval date. The weight is flat and broadly circular in plan. It has an abraded , irregular rim, which is most prominent on the top side. The irregular nature of the rim is probably due to movement in the plough soil. On both sides of the weight is a central indentation. The only markings are four irregularly spaced, incised ringlets on one half of the top side. The weight has a yellow grey patina all over.
The maximum diameter of the weight is 30.5mm, and its maximum thickness, at the rim, is 5.4mm. It weighs 23.95g ( 0.845oz).

Cast copper alloy weight of post-medieval date (1625-1685). The weight is part of a larger group of stacking weights, having a wide and relatively thick raised edge on the upper face. The front and rear faces both have turned circles around a central hollow point; all of these concentric circles are regular and well formed. The front face is further marked with a series of stamps - including a crowned C (for Charles I (1625-1649) or Charles II (1660-1685); the dagger or sword of the London Guildhall; and a faint ewer (coffee pot) of the Worshipful Company of Founders. It is possible that another mark - Tudor rose is present but this is encased in corrosion. The weight is a mid grey green colour with a poorly preserved patina. Both faces have been scratched, although many of these are patinated suggesting that the damage is pre-deposition. Other abrasion especially around the edges is present and these are likely to be caused by movement in the soil.
The weight measures diameter of 35.8mm, 4.3mm thick, and weighs 23.9 grams (0.84 ozs).

An incomplete cast lead or lead alloy weight of probable late Medieval or Post Medieval date (1250 - 1700). The weight was originally circular but now semi-circular being broken (possibly cut) in half. It is rectangular in cross section. The upper face of the disc is decorated with incised concentric rings which have been cut over with deep knife scores. The reverse face was originally flat and plain however a number of deep grooves have been cut into the reverse with a knife. The weight is a light grey colour with a powdery uneven and corroded patina that covers all surfaces. A light active powdery corrosion product is present on all surfaces. A direct parallel for this weight has not been found. It is most likely to date from the later medieval or post medieval periods.
The weight measures 44.6mm diameter (27.2mm wide), 7.8mm thick and weighs 58.69 grams

Cast lead or lead alloy weight (possibly apothecaries' weight) of probable later Medieval or Post Medieval date (1350 - 1700). The weight is sub-rectangular in plan and profile; each edge is faceted / bevelled. The upper surface of the weight is decorated with seven cast raised pellets arranged symmetrically with two rows of three and a further pellet positioned centrally between them. The reverse face is relatively flat with a slight depression at the centre - this depression is corroded but it could contain a heart shaped stamp contained within a beaded border. The weight is a mid grey colour with a relatively even patina that covers all surfaces. A light active powdery corrosion product is present on some surfaces. A direct parallel for this weight has not been found; a similar square weight with five pellets can be seen in Biggs and Withers Lead weights page 29 cat no 66. There is not a date associated with this example but it is implied that it dates from the later medieval or post medieval periods.
The weight measures 18.9mm length 17.3mm width is 4.9mm thick and weighs 9.31 grams (1/3oz (0.33 ozs) / 144 grains)
