A lead alloy weight or token of Medieval to Post Medieval date (c. AD 1400-1800).
The object is circular in plan and rectangular in cross-section. It has a relatively uniform thickness and there is no extant decoration on either the obverse or the reverse. There are the possible remnants of a central pellet on the obverse, since there is a slightly circular raised section in the centre that shows signs of breakage in the past, however, there does not appear to be any strong evidence to suggest it was an intentionally moulded pellet rather than an accidental product of casting. The dis…

Medieval decorated lead weight with heraldic device of 13th or 14th century date, possibly a quarter-pound Troy weight
The weight is of shield-shaped form (44.5mm long and 34.3mm wide) and appears to be complete, weighing 126.4g. The integral base has a border (4 -5mm wide and 7mm thick) decorated with raised pellets at each side and with two trefoil devices on the upper edge. There is a raised inner shield-shaped device (14.4mm thick). At the centre of the border, cutting the top edge of the raised shield is a rectangular slot, which may have penetrated to the base. The central …

Cast lead or lead alloy weight of probable late Medieval or Post Medieval date (1350 - 1700). The weight is sub-circular in plan and sub-rectangular in profile. The sides are irregular and taper slightly from the base. The weight is undecorated, although there are a number of scratches present on all surfaces. These are most likely to have been caused by movement in the ploughsoil. The weight is a mid grey colour with a relatively even patina that covers all surfaces. It is possible that the weight may have been burnt at one point. A direct parallel for this weight has not been found. …

Cast lead or lead alloy weight (possibly apothecaries’ weight) of probable later Medieval or Post Medieval date (1350 - 1700). The weight is sub-rectangular in plan and profile being formed from a clipped sheet of lead. Each of the sides is slightly flattened and tapers. The upper surface of the weight is decorated with four circular stamps. Each stamp is exactly the same as the others being a raised rose with a central pellet set above a border of pellets. It is possible that the weight is further decorated with small pellets or notches around the outer edge; these have been badly a…

Incomplete cast lead or lead alloy weight of probable Medieval - Post Medieval date (1350 - 1700). The weight is broadly circular in plan and regular in cross section. Neither face of the weight is decorated, however one face seems to have a series of irregular punches / stamps impressed in the surface. Due to the corrosion and patina of the weight these marks cannot be accurately read. The weight is a mid grey colour with an even, but slightly corroded and abraded, patina which covers all surfaces. This example is most likely to date from the later medieval or post medieval periods an…

Cast lead or lead alloy weight of probable medieval date (1300 - 1550). The weight is sub-circular in plan and sub-triangular (conical) in cross section. The weight is plain and undecorated. Through the centre of the weight is a length of iron wire which has snapped at the top of the weight. It is likely that this wire would have been looped to aid safe-keeping and storage. The weight measures 28.2mm diameter and is 18.9mm thick. It weighs 93.79 grams or 3.3ozs (1447.4 grains).
The weight is a mid grey colour with an even patina that covers all surfaces. It has been marked and abra…
