Cast lead or lead alloy weight of probable medieval date (1200 - 1500). The weight is sub-rectangular in plan and cross section. The front face of the weight is decorated with a series of three irregular cast pellets arranged in a line. This design is contained within a rectangular raised border. The reverse is decorated with a series of three punched concentric ovals. Both faces are relatively flat and the edges are beveled on both faces. The weight measures 25.1mm length, 17.9mm width is 4.7mm thick and weighs 14.19 grams or 0.5005ozs (219 grains). The weight is a mid grey white colo…

Cast copper alloy trade weight of probable post medieval date (1600-1750). The weight is circular in plan with a raised rim and sunken, slightly convex, interior. The rim and interior are the same on each face. The weight has been abraded in the plough soil and corrosion and wear has obscured the stamped marks. These marks are only present on the upper face and are positioned in a broadly symmetrical pattern. The stamps consist of well struck, but slightly distorted letters: F, W, L (possibly F), and V. The reverse is plain, apart from the slight distortion caused by the use of the pun…

Cast lead or lead alloy weight of probable late Medieval or Post Medieval date (1350 - 1700). The weight is sub-circular in plan and sub-rectangular in profile. The sides are irregular and taper slightly from the base. The weight is undecorated, although there are a number of scratches present on all surfaces. These are most likely to have been caused by movement in the ploughsoil. The weight is a mid grey colour with a relatively even patina that covers all surfaces. It is possible that the weight may have been burnt at one point. A direct parallel for this weight has not been found. …

Broad period: ROMAN

Irregular folded lead weight of unknown date (probably Roman – Post Medieval 50-1700 AD). The weight is broadly sub-rectangular in plan and profile. The upper edge has been pierced by a regular pierced hole (diameter: 6.2mm). The lower edge of the weight has been folded back upon itself which has created a much thicker lower edge; this presumably makes the weight hang evenly. There is no evidence of cast or incised decoration on the weight. The weight is a mid cream yellow colour with a relatively even patina. There are small areas of light grey active laminating corrosion; this is m…

Cast lead or lead alloy weight (possibly apothecaries’ weight) of probable later Medieval or Post Medieval date (1350 - 1700). The weight is sub-rectangular in plan and profile being formed from a clipped sheet of lead. Each of the sides is slightly flattened and tapers. The upper surface of the weight is decorated with four circular stamps. Each stamp is exactly the same as the others being a raised rose with a central pellet set above a border of pellets. It is possible that the weight is further decorated with small pellets or notches around the outer edge; these have been badly a…

Cast lead or lead alloy weight of probable Post Medieval or early modern date (1550 - 1800). The weight is broadly sub-rectangular in plan and profile being formed in the shape of the royal crown. The front face of the weight has an intricate designed crown which has been achieved through casting. It consists of a double jeweled band from which a double looped frame expands. Detailed floriated side fleurs are present as a fluer-de-lys shaped ornaments. At the centre of the crown is a cross formed with wedge shaped axis, above this is a much degraded plume of feathers (presumably the em…

Incomplete cast lead or lead alloy weight of probable Medieval - Post Medieval date (1350 - 1700). The weight is broadly circular in plan and regular in cross section. Neither face of the weight is decorated, however one face seems to have a series of irregular punches / stamps impressed in the surface. Due to the corrosion and patina of the weight these marks cannot be accurately read. The weight is a mid grey colour with an even, but slightly corroded and abraded, patina which covers all surfaces. This example is most likely to date from the later medieval or post medieval periods an…

Cast lead or lead alloy weight of probable medieval date (1300 - 1550). The weight is sub-circular in plan and sub-triangular (conical) in cross section. The weight is plain and undecorated. Through the centre of the weight is a length of iron wire which has snapped at the top of the weight. It is likely that this wire would have been looped to aid safe-keeping and storage. The weight measures 28.2mm diameter and is 18.9mm thick. It weighs 93.79 grams or 3.3ozs (1447.4 grains). The weight is a mid grey colour with an even patina that covers all surfaces. The weight is plain and decorated with a circumferential incised groove which has been applied to the lower part of the weight. The weight measures 18.8mm diameter and is 24.1mm high.
