Cast lead or lead alloy ‘bun shaped’ weight of probable later Medieval date (1350 - 1550). The weight is sub-circular in plan and irregular (D shaped) in cross section. The domed front face is decorated with an off-centre design positioned around a circular hole which does not pierce the opposite edge. The design consists of a raised central boss (with hole at centre) from which eight radiating ribs spread. These ribs divide the upper surface of the weight unevenly into triangular wedges. Many of these have singled raised dome like pellets within them. Much of this decorated surfac…

Cast lead or lead alloy weight of probable Medieval - Post Medieval date (1350 - 1650). The weight is broadly circular in plan and regular in cross section. The upper face has been decorated with a series of marks which form a vertical / horizontal hatched area at the centre of the weight. It is possible within these lines to discern a square shaped shield, however the design is indistinct. It is also possible that there is a small axe shaped punched mark below this shield. The axe is in the form of the medieval knights axe hammer with a central spike, punch and hammer / axe. Again thi…

Cast lead or lead alloy weight of probable medieval date (1200 - 1400). The weight is sub-circular in plan and D shaped in cross section. The front face is undecorated but the remains of a encrusted projection of some sort remains on both faces. The reverse face of the weight is flat and undecorated. The weight measures 40.8mm in diameter and is 11.1mm thick; it weighs 114.1 grams or 4.01ozs. The weight may suggest it was used as a trade or bullion / sterling weight of 4oz’s or ¼ of a pound. The weight is a mid grey colour with an even but abraded patina that covers all surfaces…

Cast lead or lead alloy weight of probable medieval date (1200 - 1400). The weight is sub-circular in plan and sub-rectangular in cross section. Both faces of the weight are undecorated. The weight measures 31.2mm in diameter and is 6.3mm thick; it weighs 43.9 grams or 1.55ozs. The weight may suggest it was used as a trade or bullion / sterling weight of 1 1/2oz’s. The weight is a mid grey cream colour with an even but abraded patina that covers all surfaces. It has been marked and abraded in the soil; this has caused the weight to become slightly asymmetrical. Similar weights ha…

Cast lead or lead alloy weight of probable Medieval - Post Medieval date (1350 - 1650). The weight is broadly circular in plan and regular in cross section. The upper face is domed with a central pellet. Surrounding the pellet are a number of patinated file marks and pits, presumably caused by air pockets in the mould. The reverse face is plain and undecorated. The weight is a mid grey colour with an even, but slightly corroded and abraded, patina which covers all surfaces. This example is most likely to date from the later medieval or post medieval periods, although a direct paral…

Cast lead alloy weight with integrally cast loop of probable medieval or post medieval date (1250 – 1700). The weight is broadly sub-rectangular in both plan and cross section. The loop is broken, and what remains of the hole is elliptical probably through wear. Along one edge of the weight a clear seam is present, this does not seem to be part of the casting residue from a mould; instead it seems to have been deliberately cut into the surface of the metal having a distinct U shaped profile. One face seems to be both decorated and have an applied surface. The surface seems to be a co…

The stone used to make the artefact is a micaceous sandstone which is a mid brown grey colour. The weight is irregular being broadly sub-circular in plan and D shaped in cross section. The central hole is drilled from both ends, is broadly circular in shaped and waisted (egg-timer) in cross section. The maximum diameter of the hole measures 8.4mm. Cast copper alloy trade weight of probable post medieval date (1600-1750). The weight is circular in plan with a raised rim and sunken, slightly convex, interior. The rim and interior are the same on each face. The weight has been abraded in the plough soil and corrosion and wear has obscured the stamped marks. These marks are only present on the upper face and are positioned in a broadly symmetrical pattern. The stamps consist of well struck, but slightly distorted letters: F, W, L (possibly F), and V. The reverse is plain, apart from the slight distortion caused by the use of the pun…

Cast lead or lead alloy weight of probable Medieval date (1200-1500 AD). The weight is broadly circular in plan and regular in cross section. The upper face is relatively flat and has a single irregular pierced hole through the centre. The corroded remnants of an iron wire are present; this wire would have aided the use and also secured it for safekeeping / storage. The weight is a mid grey colour with an even, but slightly corroded and abraded, patina which covers all surfaces. The weight has been marked by movement in the ploughsoil. This weight is most likely to date from the later…

Cast lead alloy weight, probably from a net or line of unknown date, probably medieval - modern (1200-1900). The weight is sub-cylindrical with a single cast hole set off centre (diameter 5.8mm x 3.1 mm). The hole is filled with soil and has been crushed - possibly deliberately with pliers or grips. There are several small triangular depressions across the artefact, these are patinated and are possibly associated with the crushing. The weight is a mid grey colour with an abraded slight dusty surface patina. The weight measures 24.6mm length 16.9mm width, is 15.9mm thick and weighs 2…

Cast lead alloy possible irregular weight, probably from a net or line of unknown date, probably medieval - modern (1200-1900). The weight is formed from a relatively large sheet of lead alloy which in shape is broadly sub-triangular. On the upper edge an irregular hole has been punched; this has caused a conical depression on the sheet around the hole. The hole has a diameter of 4.4mm. The weight is a mid cream colour abraded white patches present in many places. Around the hole, on the front edge, are a series of sub-rectangular patinated scars, the purpose or cause of these is unkn…

Cast copper alloy weight of post-medieval date (1625-1685). The weight is part of a larger group of stacking weights, having a wide and relatively thick raised edge on the upper face. The front and rear faces both have turned circles around a central hollow point; all of these concentric circles are regular and well formed. The front face is further marked with a series of stamps - including a crowned C (for Charles I (1625-1649) or Charles II (1660-1685); the dagger or sword of the London Guildhall; and a faint ewer (coffee pot) of the Worshipful Company of Founders. Cast lead or lead alloy 'steelyard' weight of probable Roman date (AD 100-400) or possible Medieval (1200-1500 ) date. The weight is sub-circular in plan and sub-triangular shaped (conical) in cross section. There is no evidence of cast or applied decoration. A well preserved iron rod fixing loop is present extending from the upper edge of the weight. The hole through the top of the weight is very small / narrow (diameter 2.8mm). A cast lead alloy circular weight of probable later medieval or more likely post medieval date (1350-1800). The weight is circular in plan and D shaped in cross section. The edges of the weight have thin circumferential incised lines around them. The upper face is domed and possibly originally had a cast design - now lost through corrosion and abrasion. The reverse face is undecorated and has a central depression. The weight is a mid grey colour and has an abraded and corroded patina. A direct parallel has not been found but a 17th / 18th century date is preferred. The weight meas…

A Post Medieval cast copper alloy weight dating to circa (AD 1625 - 1649). The weight is circular in plan. The upper surface has a lipped rim and two fine low-relief concentric rings in the centre. Within the concentric rings is a centrally placed circular incision. At the centre of the front face of the weight there is a circular indentation which is where the maker would have shaved the weight to make it the correct weight. At the 6 o'clock position there is the Founders Company mark of a ewer which was stamped on approved weights. At the 11 o'clock position there is the royal ciphe…
