Object type: WEIGHT
Broad period: ROMAN
County: County of Herefordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete cast lead weight or steel yard weight. The weight is sub-circular in plan. The top half is conical with the remains of an iron stud projecting from its apex, the bottom half is a shallow dome and there is a prononced lip where the two halves join. It is possible that the weight was suspended by this iron stud which is incomplete. The weight is a white to cream colour with a relatively even, but slightly corroded and abraded, patina that covers all surfaces. The small size and the conical nature suggest it was to be used with a steelyard and therefore be Roman in dat…

Cast lead alloy weight, probably from a net or line of unknown date, probably medieval - modern (1200-1900). The weight is sub-cylindrical with a single cast hole set off centre (diameter 5.8mm x 3.1 mm). The hole is filled with soil and has been crushed - possibly deliberately with pliers or grips. The weight is a mid grey colour with an even, but slightly corroded and abraded, patina which covers all surfaces. The weight has been marked by movement in the ploughsoil. This weight is most likely to date from the later…
