Perforated stone weight of uncertain date possibly medieval
The weight is of irregular rectangular form (93.9mm long, 66.6mm wide and weighing 150.5g), of variable thickness (with a maximum thickness of 19.5mm) and is made from a coarse-grained sandstone. The top edge and one of the side edges appear to be moderately rounded and are likely to be unmodified, while the other two edges are irregular and probably trimmed to the desired shape. The perforation is circular (10.6mm diameter) and is wider at one face, but appears to have been drilled rather than pecked. One face (convex) …

A complete cast lead or lead alloy weight of probable medieval date (1300 - 1550). The weight is broadly oval (sub-rectangular with tapering sides terminating in blunt points) in plan and cross section. On the upper point is an integral cast suspension loop which would have been circular in plan and oval in cross section but is distorted, probably from plough damage. The perforation / hole through the centre is also oval and again distorted. The body of the weight has a large central rib which extends from the upper edge to the base. The weight seems to be relatively undecorated. The …

Medieval decorated lead weight with heraldic device of 13th or 14th century date, possibly a quarter-pound Troy weight
The weight is of shield-shaped form (44.5mm long and 34.3mm wide) and appears to be complete, weighing 126.4g. The integral base has a border (4 -5mm wide and 7mm thick) decorated with raised pellets at each side and with two trefoil devices on the upper edge. There is a raised inner shield-shaped device (14.4mm thick). At the centre of the border, cutting the top edge of the raised shield is a rectangular slot, which may have penetrated to the base. The central …

A Roman or later copper alloy acorn-shaped object, possibly a slide weight from a steelyard or statera. The shell of the acorn is raised. The top has a flattened projection in which is an offset hole or suspension loop. Inside the hole remains a piece of copper alloy wire measuring 2.5mm in diameter. The bottom has been abraded and is now a slightly flattened both on the perimeter and base. There is a single circular countersunk mark on the perimeter. The surface is heavily encrusted in parts, but the bare alloy shows a red brown patina. The weight of the object is 18.45 grams, close…

An incomplete lead-alloy steelyard weight of Roman date, c.AD 43 - 410. The weight is bi-conical in form and circular in cross section and has a slightly faceted rough surface. It has no obvious signs of suspension, as one end has broken away, possibly containing the suspension loop. The weight is showing signs of cracking and delamination, particularly around the area that has sheared away. It has a mixed grey to creamy brown patina
The length of the weight is: 28.1mm Diameter: 35.6mm Weight: 118gms

A cast lead alloy circular weight of probable later medieval or more likely post medieval date (1350-1800). The weight is circular in plan and D shaped in cross section. The edges of the weight have thin circumferential incised lines around them. The upper face is domed and possibly originally had a cast design - now lost through corrosion and abrasion. The reverse face is undecorated and has a central depression. The weight is a mid grey colour and has an abraded and corroded patina. A direct parallel has not been found but a 17th / 18th century date is preferred.
The weight meas…

Cast lead alloy possible irregular weight, probably from a net or line of unknown date, probably medieval - modern (1200-1900). The weight is formed from a relatively large sheet of lead alloy which in shape is broadly sub-triangular. On the upper edge an irregular hole has been punched; this has caused a conical depression on the sheet around the hole. The hole has a diameter of 4.4mm. The weight is a mid cream colour abraded white patches present in many places. Around the hole, on the front edge, are a series of sub-rectangular patinated scars, the purpose or cause of these is unkn…

Cast lead or lead alloy weight of probable medieval date (1300 - 1550). The weight is sub-circular (formed from eight uneven and irregular facets / faces) in plan and sub-triangular (conical) in profile. Through the centre of the weight is a cast conical hole. The purpose of this hole is uncertain but it might have had a length of wire or string to allow it to be suspended, this would aid safe-keeping and storage. The weight measures 22.41mm in length, 20.74mm width and is 21.77mm high. It weighs 60.1 grams.
The weight undecorated. It is a mid grey colour with an even patina that co…
