A lead alloy weight, possibly a pump seal weight, of likely Post Medieval date (c. AD 1650-1800). The weight is sub-rectangular in plan, profile, and cross section. On the top of the weight, there is a sub-rectangular recess where the left and right hand edges are raised and in the centre there is a sub-oval lug (26.19mm long, 22.75mm wide). On the reverse, there are two raised sections on both the left and right hand side that both curve inwards, creating a recess that has larger, trapezoidal sections at the top and the bottom of the weight connected by a narrower sub-rectangula…

A lead alloy weight of probably Medieval to Post Medieval date (c. AD 1100-1800). The object is discoid with a raised rim around the edge of the obverse. There are two prominent grooves in the rim, one at around 12 o'clock (8.42mm long, 2.34mm wide) and one at 7 o'clock (9.02mm long, 1.85mm wide). There is a raised, separate trapezoidal lead alloy section (18.56mm long, 10.38mm wide) that is attached to the obverse via a rusted rivet or nail at an oblique angle near the centre from 10 o'clock to 12 o'clock. In the centre, there is a single, transverse engrave…

A Post Medieval copper alloy trade weight of Charles I or II (1625-1649 or 1660-1685). The weight is discoidal, its upper side is concave, has a raised rim, and a central circular indentation which is 12.8mm in diameter. Around this circle there are four mostly well-defined stamp marks and a very faint one: 1) a crowned CR monogram (the R is barely discernible), which marks this weight as having been made during Charles’ reign, 2) a sword hilt, 3) the letter A, for the avoirdupois system, 4) an unclear stamp, shaped like a D, possibly the tip of the sword whose hilt can be seen o…

Cast copper alloy trade weight of probable later medieval or post medieval date (14500-1850). The weight is circular in plan with a series of incised compass drawn incised lines creating a thick border around the edge. The centre of the weight has been punched / stamped with a simple crown. The crown has a curved base and high bi-foliate side fleurs which conjoin with the central lis and ornaments to create a stylised design. The reverse face has a series of heavily applied file marks which are patinated. It is unmarked and the surface is slight corroded. No other stamped marks are p…

A complete copper alloy probable apothecary or coin weight, of uncertain dating possibly from Early Post Medieval to Modern (AD 1600 toAD 1900). The probable weight is circular in shape, with a flat cross section. The object has a raised outer rim on both faces, this possibly enabled the object to be stacked. The objects surfaces are very worn and corroded therefore it is not possible to determine any design on either faces. The probable weight is a light to mid-green colour, with an uneven surface patina. The object is similar to apothecary weights as illustrated in Biggs (1992) p…

A cast lead alloy circular weight of probable later medieval or more likely post medieval date (1350-1800). The weight is circular in plan and D shaped in cross section. The edges of the weight have thin circumferential incised lines around them. The upper face is domed and possibly originally had a cast design - now lost through corrosion and abrasion. The reverse face is undecorated and has a central depression. The weight is a mid grey colour and has an abraded and corroded patina. A direct parallel has not been found but a 17th / 18th century date is preferred. The weight meas…

Cast lead alloy possible irregular weight, probably from a net or line of unknown date, probably medieval - modern (1200-1900). The weight is formed from a relatively large sheet of lead alloy which in shape is broadly sub-triangular. On the upper edge an irregular hole has been punched; this has caused a conical depression on the sheet around the hole. The hole has a diameter of 4.4mm. The weight is a mid cream colour abraded white patches present in many places. A cast lead alloy circular ball (similar in size and shape to a musket ball) of probable post medieval 1600-1800 date. The ball has a circular shaped hole through its mid point (5.19mm in diameter) and has no sign of decoration, casting seam or casting spur. It is a light grey colour with a relatively thick surface patina. It is highly unlikely that the ball is from shot and instead is suggested to be from a line or net weight.
