Cast lead or lead alloy weight of probable medieval date (1200 - 1550). The weight is sub-cylindrical (egg shaped) being oval in plan and cross section. A small copper alloy wire loop is imbedded in the top of the weight it is 4.8mm high, 1.7mm diameter. The hole has a diameter 4.2mm and a clear U shaped groove is present in the top of the weight to enable a cord or wire to be fitted through the loop. This loop was used to suspend the weight using cord or wire and aided safe-keeping and storage. The weight is undecorated. It is a mid grey colour with an abraded and corroded patina tha…

A cast lead or lead alloy weight of probable Medieval date (1200-1500 AD). The weight is broadly circular in plan and regular in cross section. The upper face is relatively flat and has a series of cast marks impressed upon it. These marks seem to be random in shape and pattern, mostly being irregular crescents or pellets. The reverse face is flat and undecorated. The weight is a mid cream grey colour with an even, but slightly corroded and abraded, patina which covers all surfaces. This weight is most likely to date from the later medieval period, although a direct parallel has not b…

A cast lead or lead alloy weight or possibly a large uniface token of probable Medieval or post medieval date (1200-1650 AD). The weight is broadly circular in plan and regular in cross section. The upper face is decorated with an irregular saltire cross which is itself divided by another horizontal cast bar. The upper quarter is pierced with an irregular shaped oval hole. The reverse is relatively flat, it possibly has a further cast design within a small oval panel on one edge. The weight is a mid grey colour with an even, but slightly corroded and abraded, patina which covers …

A complete cast lead alloy cylindrial weight of probable Medieval dating (11th to 15th Centuries AD). The weight is circular in plan and rectangular in cross section. It consists of a small cylindrial weight, with a concavity in the upper most surface. The base is flat. It has a diameter of 14.2mm and is 9.9mm tall. It weighs 13.1 grams / 0.46 oz. It probably was originally 0.5 oz in weight, but has lost some weight due to abrasion suffered by being in the plough soil. Weights of this type are hard to accurately date, as they are a functional artefact, and change li…

A cast lead or lead alloy weight of unknown date possibly Roman (100-400 AD) although more likely to be of medieval date (1300 - 1550). The weight is irregular being broadly sub-oval in plan and D shaped in cross section, with one flat face and one curved or domed face. Through the upper edge a circular projection has been cut, clear knife marks can be seen within the conical hole suggesting that the weight has either been augmented or was originally crude. The hole is stained with an orange iron corrosion suggesting that an iron wire may have been used to suspend. The flat face has a…

Cast lead or lead alloy weight of probable late Medieval or Post Medieval date (1350 - 1700). The weight is sub-circular in plan and sub-triangular shaped (conical) in cross section. The exterior surface is uneven and abraded; there is no evidence of cast or applied decoration. An irregular cast hole is present piercing the weight from top to bottom, it is filled with the remains of an iron rod, which presumably was looped and aided the safe keeping of the weight. The weight is a mid grey colour with a relatively even, but slightly corroded and abraded, patina that covers all surfaces…

Incomplete fragment of a cast lead or lead alloy weight or possibly steelyard weight of either Roman date (possibly) or late Medieval - Post Medieval date (1350 - 1700). The weight is sub-circular in plan and D shaped (domed) in cross section. The weight is broadly conical with the remains of an iron stud projecting from the base. It is possible that the weight was suspended by this iron stud which is incomplete. The weight is a mid grey colour with a relatively even, but slightly corroded and abraded, patina that covers all surfaces. A direct parallel for this weight has not been fou…

Cast lead alloy weight with integrally cast loop of probable medieval or post medieval date (1250 - 1700). The weight is broadly sub-rectangular in both plan and cross section. The loop is complete and the whole is somewhat elliptical probably through wear (diameter 3.7mm). Along one edge of the weight a clear seam is present; when the base is viewed it is clear that this weight has been formed by rolling thick sheet and then piercing the top. A clear spiral of metal can be seen at the base. There seems to be no decoration present. The weight is a mid grey cream colour with a good rel…

Cast lead or lead alloy weight (or possibly a very thick token) of probable late Medieval or Post Medieval date (1350 - 1650). The weight is circular in plan and D shaped in cross section. The edges around the front face are faceted; the design on the front consists of high relief cast ribs and pellets. These forms the initial I b or possibly 91 depending on direction of orientation. The lines are all pellet terminalled and there are two pellets in the field, one below the 9 (or above the b) and one after the 1 (or before the I). The reverse face is plain and undecorated. A cast lead alloy weight of probable Roman or Medieval date 100 -1650 AD. The weight is an irregular conical shape with the base being an irregular circular shape and the apex an irregular dome. The weight is undecorated, although it has a series of possible marks on the outer surface these are distorted by laminating corrosion patina. The weight is pierced at the apex by an irregular slanting hole which has possibly cast rather than drilled: the hole has a diameter of 4.9mm. Without other artefacts from the same context it is difficult to date the artefact; due to the variation in fi…

Cast lead alloy weight, of unknown date probably later medieval 1300-1800 AD. The weight is sub-circular in plan and sub-rectangular in profile; in cross section it is an irregular circle. Through the centre is a sub-circular hole (11.6mm x 12.8mm) The upper edge on the internal face of the hole are a series of worn grooves, presumably from cord, the grooves have an even width of 1.8mm each. There is no sign of decoration and the ring is a mid grey colour with an even, but powdery corrosion. Similar weights have been dated to both the Roman and the Medieval periods however it is most …

Cast lead alloy weight, or possible spindle whorl of unknown date probably later medieval 1300-1600 AD. There is no sign of decoration and the ring is a mid grey colour with an even, but powdery corrosion. Similar weights have been dated to both the Roman and the Medieval periods however it is most likely that this is of medieval date, probably for use as a net or line weight. Cast lead or lead alloy (probable) undecorated weight of probable medieval or post-medieval date (1300 - 1650). The weight is broadly sub-triangular in plan and cross section. It measures 60.4mm in length, 61.3mm width and is 26.4mm thick. It weighs 249.85 grams or 8.9 ozs. The weight is a mid grey colour with an abraded and corroded patina that covers all surfaces. It has been marked and abraded in the soil; this has caused the weight to become asymmetrical. A large number of inclusions (grit and stone) have been embedded in the surface corrosion of the weight. Similar weights have…

Cast lead or lead alloy ‘bun shaped’ weight of probable later Medieval date (1350 - 1550). The weight is sub-circular in plan and irregular (D shaped) in cross section. The domed front face is decorated with an off-centre design positioned around a circular hole which does not pierce the opposite edge. The design consists of a raised central boss (with hole at centre) from which eight radiating ribs spread. These ribs divide the upper surface of the weight unevenly into triangular wedges. Many of these have singled raised dome like pellets within them. Much of this decorated surfac…

Cast lead or lead alloy weight of probable Medieval - Post Medieval date (1350 - 1650). The weight is broadly circular in plan and regular in cross section. The upper face has been decorated with a series of marks which form a vertical / horizontal hatched area at the centre of the weight. It is possible within these lines to discern a square shaped shield, however the design is indistinct. It is also possible that there is a small axe shaped punched mark below this shield. The axe is in the form of the medieval knights axe hammer with a central spike, punch and hammer / axe. Again thi…
