Perforated stone weight of uncertain date possibly medieval
The weight is of irregular rectangular form (93.9mm long, 66.6mm wide and weighing 150.5g), of variable thickness (with a maximum thickness of 19.5mm) and is made from a coarse-grained sandstone. The top edge and one of the side edges appear to be moderately rounded and are likely to be unmodified, while the other two edges are irregular and probably trimmed to the desired shape. The perforation is circular (10.6mm diameter) and is wider at one face, but appears to have been drilled rather than pecked. One face (convex) …

A lead alloy weight or possible spindle whorl of Roman to Post Medieval date (AD1 - 1650). In plan the object is semi-circular. The object has a central semi-circular perforation which measures 4.10mm in width. It is possible the object was once circular and only half of the object is now remaining. The upper surface is decorated with a series of linear incisions. The reverse surface of the object is un-decorated. The object has a cream coloured patina across all surfaces. Spindle whorls and weights have been used for a long period of time and are therefore very difficult to date prec…

Irregular folded lead weight of unknown date (probably Roman – Post Medieval 50-1700 AD). The weight is broadly sub-rectangular in plan and profile. The upper edge has been pierced by a regular pierced hole (diameter: 6.2mm). The lower edge of the weight has been folded back upon itself which has created a much thicker lower edge; this presumably makes the weight hang evenly. There is no evidence of cast or incised decoration on the weight. The weight is a mid cream yellow colour with a relatively even patina. There are small areas of light grey active laminating corrosion; this is m…

An incomplete cast lead weight or steel yard weight.
The weight is sub-circular in plan. The top half is conical with the remains of an iron stud projecting from its apex, the bottom half is a shallow dome and there is a prononced lip where the two halves join. It is possible that the weight was suspended by this iron stud which is incomplete. The weight is a white to cream colour with a relatively even, but slightly corroded and abraded, patina that covers all surfaces.
The small size and the conical nature suggest it was to be used with a steelyard and therefore be Roman in dat…

A cast lead weight of Roman to Post Medieval date (1 - 1650 AD), most probably Roman (AD50-350). The weight is broadly circular in plan and D shaped in cross section; it has been heavily eroded in the soil. The central hole is a an irregular oval shape and has been cast / set off centre; it has an internal diameter of 8.1mm. Both faces are plain and undecorated. The weight has a cream - white coloured surface patina. Weights are used for a long period of time and as such are very difficult to date precisely without other evidence (such as pottery).

A Roman or later copper alloy acorn-shaped object, possibly a slide weight from a steelyard or statera. The shell of the acorn is raised. The top has a flattened projection in which is an offset hole or suspension loop. Inside the hole remains a piece of copper alloy wire measuring 2.5mm in diameter. The bottom has been abraded and is now a slightly flattened both on the perimeter and base. There is a single circular countersunk mark on the perimeter. The surface is heavily encrusted in parts, but the bare alloy shows a red brown patina. The weight of the object is 18.45 grams, close…

Cast lead or lead alloy weight of probable Post Medieval or early modern date (1550 - 1800). The weight is broadly sub-rectangular in plan and profile being formed in the shape of the royal crown. The front face of the weight has an intricate designed crown which has been achieved through casting. It consists of a double jeweled band from which a double looped frame expands.
