A large highly decorated near complete lid most probably from a cistern of post medieval date 1650-1850. The fragment is broken into four large parts and was originally identified as a potential Roman mortaria fragment. However, more detailed research has idfentified the fabric as a hard fired earthenware which has well sorted small black coal measure grits within the mica rich matrix. This is best compared with the fabric of 18th century staffordshire slipwares. The surface of all the sherds is laminating and the original decoration scheme applied to the exterior faces is somewhat lo…

Rim sherd of a relatively thin walled coarseware pottery vessel. The sherd dates to the Roman period (50 - 410) and conforms mostly to the local 'Severn Valley' like wares. The fabric is relatively soft with a number of angular and sub-angular quartz, grit and ironstone inclusions. The fabric also contains considerable inclusions of mica / sand. The fabric colour is a uniform reduced mid grey colour. The diameter of the rim cannot be suggested due to the small size of the sherd. Likewise, he height or capacity of the vessel cannot be estimated. The form of the rim is everted. The s…
