Sherd from the side wall of a partially glazed pottery vessel, probably a broad bowl - possibly of agricultural nature of late medieval or post medieval date (1450 - 1600). The fabric of the sherd is a hard earthenware with a number of small rounded and sub-angular grit, quartz, ironstone and broken burnt pottery inclusions. The colour of the fabric is a mid brown orange. The inner face of the sherd has had a light green coloured Tudor' mid brown green glaze applied to it. This has decayed and is very unstable and flakey. There is not enough of the body of the pot surviving to give an…

Sherd from the rim of a relatively thin walled Midlands Purple Ware pottery vessel, probably a tankard or beaker of post medieval date (1600 - 1720). This sherd is relatively fresh with broken edges. The fabric of the sherd is a very hard earthenware (almost viscous stoneware) with a number of small rounded and sub-angular grit and quartz inclusions. There is also a high proportion of mica and sand like grains present in the fabric. The fabric colour is mid purple brown and the inner and outer surfaces of the sherd is a mottled purple grey. The external surface has a series of mottled…

Two rim sherds from similar wheel thrown ceramic vessels of Roman dating (2nd to 4th Centuries AD). The rim sherds consist of a fabric similar to that known as Dorset Black Burnished Ware, both probably originally came from a small shallow carrinated bowls or cup type vessels having stepped exterior surfaces and flat topped rims. Sherd 1 measures: 61.7mm width and 24.7mm length, it is 23.1mm high and 9.1mm thick at the rim, 4.8mm tick across the body. It weighs: 13.12 grams. The exterior rim has a projected diameter of 11cm and represents 19% of the rim. Sherd 2 measures: 44.1mm…

A sherd from the base of a wheel thrown Samian ceramic vessel / plate of Roman dating. The sherd is from the side of a shallow bowl and is heavily abraded. The reverse has an applied foot ring attached with a projected diameter of 12cm. The vessel has much worn oxidised fabric with a red slip. This fabric type is consistent with an imported fine ware from Gaul possibly La Grauf. The form of the sherd is suggestive of a small plate similar to Dragondorf form 15 or 17 dating from the earlier period (c. AD 50-200). The sherd is 43.5mm width and 28.8mm length, it is 17.3mm thick acro…

A rimsherd from a wheel thrown ceramic vessel of Roman date. The sherd has an oxidised fabric with a red applied slip. This fabric type is consistent with an imported fine ware from Gaul, known as Samian ware. This pottery type is typically dates from the 1st to 3rd Century AD. Subtle differences in the fabric can distinguish the origin of the pottery from South Gaul to Central Gaul or East Gaul. The sherd is suggestive of a small shallow bowl or cup / beaker similar to Dragendorff 33 (a small conical cup with a footstand). This cup type was first appeared during the reign of Tiberius…

Seven sherds representing 84% of the base from a cremation urn / burial vessel - most probably of Early - Middle Bronze Age date (2200-1800 BC). The seven sherds vary in size, thickness and weight but all have been broken due to disturbance in the ground through ploughing having crisp fresh unweathered or abraded edges. The fragments were gathered together by the farmer who noticed a white powdery spread in a recently improved / ploughed field suggesting that they were recovered shortly after disturbing the below ground archaeological context. It is probable that the ceramics represen…

A cast copper alloy vessel leg / pot-leg, probably from a tripod cooking vessel, possibly of medieval date (1000-1500). The object consists of an almost complete pot leg with an outer rounded surface and a flat inner surface. There is no swelling at the foot, however the leg processes in a narrowing fashion. The leg is sub-triangular and unornamented. It is heavily corroded with a fine granular surface. The object has a length of 45.87mm, a width varying from 30.71mm to 22.58, a thickness of 8.99mm, it weighs 38.2 grams.

An incomplete Roman copper-alloy looped handle escutcheon plate attachment for a vessel (c. AD 40-410). This escutcheon is cast being convex at the front and mostly concave at the rear. Viewed from the top it is curvilinear to accommodate the body of the copper-alloy vessel, to which it would have originally been soldered. The diameter of the vessel cannot be estimated it is slightly curved suggesting that the vessel was of significant (cauldron) size. The moulded design at the front is integral with the plate and was cast in one piece. The single loop at the top of the plate is offse…

Fragment from the base of a cast leaded copper alloy turned vessel of probable late medieval to post medieval date (1400 - 1650). The fragment is worn and irregular in plan and bowed in profile. It is likely to be from the base of a large dish, bowl, or cooking vessel. The vessel fragment is a mid-green colour with a polished patina which survives well on all surfaces. The underside is heavily 'brushed' but patinated suggesting that this occurred in antiquity. Due to the size of the fragment a projected diameter cannot be suggested. The fragment measures 52.3mm in length, 26.13mm i…
