A complete lead alloy vessel repair (pot mend) of Roman dating, probably between 2nd to 4th Centuries AD. The vessel repair is sub oval in plan, and irregular in cross section. It consists of two sub oval 'plugs' of lead either side (sandwiching) a sherd of pottery. The repair would have originally been 'H' shape in construction, with a central rivet and two radiating arms either side of the ceramic vessel, to seal the hole and repair the broken vessel. A sherd of pottery is still present within the vessel repair. It has an oxidised fabric, with a reduced core. The ceramic fabri…

A fragment from a cast lead alloy vessel repair (pot mend) of either Roman (50-400) or Medieval date (1200-1500). The repair is incomplete being broken and fragmentary in form. In plan it is broadly oval and is an abraded H shaped in cross section. The mend does not have the remnants of the pottery and so the date cannot be refined further. These types of mend were used within both the Roman and Medieval periods; however, due to the nature of the site from which this comes it is more likely to be Roman than medieval in date. The vessel repairs measures 27.7mm length, 19.7mm width i…

Lead or lead alloy cast inkwell of probable post medieval date (1600-1800). The inkwell is broadly sub-rectangular in both plan and profile. From the centre of the upper part a small inverted circular funnel projects, the upper part of this has an irregular pierced hole which would have acted as a mouth through which the ink could be accessed and toped up. Apart from the mouth of the inkwell, the upper part is relatively flat. Each of the four sides is decorated with three vertical motifs, two of which are vertical groves which border a vertical concave recess. The edges of the inkwel…
