A complete copper alloy double looped buckle, with zoomorphic decoration, of probable Late Medieval to Early Post Medieval dating (AD 1500 to AD 1650). The buckle consists of a double oval looped buckle (spectacle), with moulded transverse ridges on the frame as decoration. Projecting from one outer edge is a zoomorphic head. The head is triangular in shape, with pointed oval shaped eyes, and appears to be representing a bird's head. Part of the sheet copper alloy buckle plate is still present wrapped around the central bar. Iron corrosion products (from an iron pin) cover the buckl…

A cast copper-alloy sub-rectangular shoe buckle with drilled frame for seperate spindle, c.1720-1790. The frame of the buckle is concave in profile, with squared-off edges, and drilled holes for a seperate spindle, now missing. The surface of the buckle has moulded scrolls and sashes, with transverse lines at the buckles inner four corners, and at its opposite sides, parrallel to the missing spindle. The surface of the buckle has the remains of iron staining in placers, suggesting possibly that the now missing spindle and chape were of iron construction. The back of the buc…

A cast copper alloy single looped D shaped buckle with a separate rectangular strap plate of medieval date (c.1350 to 1450 AD). The buckle frame is broadly D shaped in plan, with a broad D shape cross section. At the centre of the frame, a single angular pointed projection with a U shaped notch as pin rest is present. The strap bar is off set. Folded around the strap bar is a buckle plate formed from sheet metal. A centrally located slot has been cut into the buckle plate to allow the pin to pivot on the strap bar. The edges of the buckle plate have been offset to allow for the off…

At the centre of the frame, a single angular pointed projection with a U shaped notch as pin rest is present. The strap bar is off set. A fragment of a cast copper alloy D shaped buckle frame, probably dating to the late Medieval period (Late 13th to Early 14th Centuries). Approximately 25% of the buckle frame is present and consists of the upper half of the external edge of the frame. It is broadly D shaped in cross section. There appears to be an U shaped slot present, presumably the pin rest. The external edge is angled, with traces of gilding visible. The buckle frame fragment measures 22.35mm in length, 17.84mm in width, and 3.50mm thick. It weighs 1.9 grams. A buckle frame of a similar style …

An incomplete cast copper alloy buckle of post-medieval date (1690-1720). The frame of the buckle is sub-rectangular in plan with two central drilled holes to which an incomplete copper alloy chape is fixed; from the abundant iron corrosion the drilled pin on which the chape fits is formed of iron. In profile the frame is slightly bowed. There is no evidence of a pin rest on the frame. There is also no decoration. The Similar copper alloy examples to this buckle can be seen in Ross Whitehead's book 'Buckles 1250 - 1800', page 103. Whitehead suggests that these buckles date from the po…

An incomplete Medieval cast copper-alloy annular buckle, two fragments survive. The frame is incomplete part of the pin bar is extant. The frame and pin bar are circular in cross section. The buckle is decorated with with a zigzag incision running along the front face of the frame. Similar decoration on a annular buckle can be found in Egan 1991 p.61 fig. 213 dating to 1400-1450. The buckle is larger than the published example and had a pin bar, a broader date of 1400 - 1650 is suggested. Parts of the surviving frame are heavily worn and the pin is missing. The larger fragment is 31…

A cast copper alloy annular buckle. In plan, the buckle frame is circular and oval in section. The frame is undecorated. The pin is sub-rectangular in plan. The tip is has a slightly tapering to a broken terminal towards the tip. The break was probably quite recent. The opposite terminal, in profile, forms a ā€˜Cā€™ shape, which would have curled around the strap bar of a buckle frame. The upper surface, as the curl starts, is decorated with a ridge decorated with fine ribs. The surface of the frame and pin is in good condition, it has a dark grey patina. Medieval (late 13th to 14th century) buckle: The copper alloy buckle frame was probably a double looped oval frame, but only one loop and the strap bar remains. The reverse is undecorated and flat. The strap bar is slightly narrowed, and is a rounded trapezoid in section. There is a copper alloy pin curled around the strap bar. Medieval (c. 1270 to mid 14th century) buckle: The copper alloy frame is a double looped rectangle. The strap bar is narrowed and is sub-triangular in section. The strap bar bisects the narrow edges of the frame, therefore running the length of the frame rather than the width. The long edges of the loop is decorated with four deep rabbets, with lengthways and transverse grooves. Some of the grooves may have been filled and have traces of a matte red-brown substance, which looks similar to red copper corrosion, but is very localised in these grooves. Otherwise the surface of the buckle…
