Object type: BLADE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: County of Herefordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A probable Mesolithic flint blade, with retouch in the form of notches on the left lateral edge (when held with the dorsal side facing). These notches may have been used for stripping bark during the creation of arrow shafts, although they could equally have had many other functions. Some cortex remains on the edges of the flint. The flint has a pale cream patina with grey/brown inclusions. It measures 41.35 mm long, 18.44 mm wide, 4.46 mm thick and weighs 3.9 grams. It is trapezoidal in section.

A Mesolithic flint bladelet. The flint does not appear to have been retouched after having been struck from its core. The flint used is a pale cream to grey in colour. It is sub-triangular in section and measures 28.58 mm long, 11.25 mm wide, 3.32 mm thick and weighs 1.0 grams.

A Mesolithic flint bladelet. It appears to have been broken in prehistory, as there is a break with a patina which matches that visible on the exterior of the rest of the flint. It is possible that this break was deliberate as part of the manufacture of a microlith using the microburin technique, though this is far from certain. The remains of the bladelet measure 26.01 mm long, 10.97 mm wide, 5.43 mm thick and weighs 1.3 grams. It is triangular in section and grey in colour with cream patches.

A Mesolithic flint blade. It has been retouched with a notch towards the butt end of the left lateral edge (when held with the dorsal side facing) and also at the distal end. Both areas of retouch were perhaps designed to perform scraping functions. The blade measures 38.77 mm long, 12.51 mm wide, 3.92 mm thick and weighs 1.8 grams. The ventral face is slightly concaved and the blade is trapezoidal in section. the flint has a pale grey to brown patina, revealing a dark grey where it has been retouched.

A Mesolithic notched blade. There are two notches and further retouch along the left lateral edge (when held with dorsal side facing). The opposite lateral edge has also been subject to some retouch. It is uncertain whether both sides would have had a function, or whether one would have been hafted. However, given that both sides have been subject to retouch they may have fulfilled different functions. The flint is pale grey in colour. It measures 27.33 mm long, 11.07 mm wide, 3.89 mm thick and weighs 1.1 grams. It is sub-triangular in section.

A Mesolithic flint blade. The blade does not appear to have been subject to further retouch after having been struck from its core. The bulb of percussion and bulb scar are clearly visible at the butt of the blade, on the ventral side. The dorsal face has negative removal scars where other flakes were removed from the core previously. The tip of the blade is missing, and judging by the even patina this is an ancient break. The flint is a pale cream colour with small orange to brown inclusions. The flint is broadly triangular in section. It measures 35.4 mm long, 15.4 mm wide, 6.5 mm t…

A Mesolithic flint blade. The flint has partial retouch along its right lateral edge (when held with dorsal side facing). This may have been to make the flint more comfortable to hold. The left lateral edge has no retouch but is naturally quite sharp, so this edge may have been used as a cutting blade. The distal end of the blade is cortical. The bulb of percussion is clearly visible at the proximal end on the ventral face. The ventral face is a dark grey in colour with cream to white inclusions. The left side of the dorsal face is a cream to white colour, whilst the right is a dark g

The dorsal surface has two predominant vertical scars, with a slender third having been removed from one edge. This edge, at a later date has been re-touched as the patina has been removed, and a notch has been formed at the proximal end. It measures 31.93mm long, 11.98mm wide, 5.88mm thick and weighs 1.5g. The dorsal surface has three vertical scars and the ventral surface has traces of conchoidal ripples. The proximal end is missing, but the patina which covers the surface also covers the break. One on lateral edge there is a small portion of damage rather than re-touch revealing a dark grey flint. It measures 31.88mm long, 14.11mm wide, 3.39mm thick and weighing 2.17g. A Neolithic flint blade from the outer area of the core. The flint is probably a river sourced pebble. The blade shows both hinge fractures on the front (dorsal) face and choncoidal fractures and bulb of percussion on the reverse (ventral). The striking platform is also present. The retouch on the long edges is from indirect percussion and is neat and regular. The cortex suggests that several blades have been removed from the core prior to the removal of this flake
