An un-diagnostic sherd from the base of a relatively thick walled glazed pottery vessel; not enough survives to indicate the form or overall size. The sherd is most likely to date from the later medieval period (1250 - 1450). It is irregular in plan and curved in profile. The fabric is a relatively hard fired earthenware with a number of small angular and sub-angular grit, and quartz inclusions. The fabric is also mica rich. The colour of the fabric is a two tone with the inner surface being a brown orange colour and the outer surface and core being a grey. The glaze has been applied t…

Rim sherd of an unglazed earthenware pottery vessel probably dating from the medieval period (1050 - 1350). The sherd is most likely to be from a cooking pot or storage jar. The fabric of the sherd is a relatively hard earthenware with a number of small angular and sub-angular grit and quartz inclusions. There is also a large amount of mica in the fabric. The fabric colour of the sherd is two tone, the centre is a reduced dark grey black colour, whilst the inner and outer surfaces are an oxidised mid brown orange colour. The rim has an inturned lip. The outer surface does not seem to b…

Rim sherd of a relatively thin walled coarseware pottery 'Severn Valley' vessel. The sherd dates to the Roman period (50 - 410), however, not enough of the sherd survives to be certain of the form or size and without this a more specific date is difficult. The rim has a swollen out-turned rim. The fabric is relatively soft with a number of angular and sub-angular quartz, grit and ironstone inclusions. The fabric also contains considerable inclusions of mica / sand. The fabric colour is a uniform mid orange colour. A suggested diameter of the rim is 22cm, and the sherd represent…

The bowl of a post medieval (later 17th century) clay tobacco pipe. This bowl is broadly oval and is at an angle of about 55 degrees to the plane of the flat heel. The stem is oval in cross-section and the bore is offset. The shape, size and angle of the bowl, along with the wide bore of the stem suggest a later 17th century date c1660-1680. There are two incised, rouletted concentric rings approximately 5-8mm below the rim of the bowl. The top ring is plain, the lower one patterned. These rings fade away on one side of the bowl. The pipe also shows signs of burnishing and (straig…

Seven sherds representing 84% of the base from a cremation urn / burial vessel - most probably of Early - Middle Bronze Age date (2200-1800 BC). The seven sherds vary in size, thickness and weight but all have been broken due to disturbance in the ground through ploughing having crisp fresh unweathered or abraded edges. The fragments were gathered together by the farmer who noticed a white powdery spread in a recently improved / ploughed field suggesting that they were recovered shortly after disturbing the below ground archaeological context. It is probable that the ceramics represen…

Nine fragments of Roman ceramic building material. One is likely to be part of a mainated oxidised mica rich tile, whilst the other eight are fired earth, possibly from daub as all have organic inclusions and a coarse matrix. All nine pieces are dated by their association with a substantial assemblage of Roman pottery although late medieval and post medieval material has been recovered from the same garden in the past The CBM weighs 90.3grams

A sherd from the base of a wheel thrown Samian ceramic vessel / plate of Roman dating. The sherd is from the side of a shallow bowl and is heavily abraded. The reverse has an applied foot ring attached with a projected diameter of 12cm. The vessel has much worn oxidised fabric with a red slip. This fabric type is consistent with an imported fine ware from Gaul possibly La Grauf. The form of the sherd is suggestive of a small plate similar to Dragondorf form 15 or 17 dating from the earlier period (c. AD 50-200). The sherd is 43.5mm width and 28.8mm length, it is 17.3mm thick acro…
