Record ID: WMID-381E07
Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: County of Herefordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A probable Mesolithic flint tool, probably an end scraper formed from a flake. There is no retouch along the lateral edges, but there is a small amount of retouch applied from the ventral surface at the distal end of the flake. The flint is a pale grey to white in colour. It is sub-trapezoidal in section. It measures 33.8 mm long, 19.8 mm wide, 5.51 m thick and weighs 3.7 grams.

A probable Mesolithic tool, probably a scraper made from a flake. The butt of the flake is largely cortical, with the bulb of percussion just below this cortex on the ventral face. On the dorsal face, just above the cortex at the proximal end, the flake has been extensively worked with invasive retouch, possibly to form a scraping edge. Alternatively, this end may have been reworked to form a blunted ege to allow the flint to be held more comfortably, and it may have been the opposite end which was intended for use as a tool. Here, a notch has been removed and there is some further re…

Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)

A probable flint scraper or knife, most likely to be Mesolithic in date. Cortex has been left on part of the flake, probably to facilitate comfortable handling. Just above the cortex. the flake has been worked to remove a thumb shaped notch, once again, probably to make it more comfortable to hold. On the opposite edge a series of notches have been removed by pressure flaking from the ventral surface. This edge is sharp and may have served as a knife or a notched tool, possibly for stripping bark from wood. The flint is pale cream to grey in colour, with brown patches and some pink c…

A flint scraper or knife, probably Mesolithic in date. Cortex has been left on part of the flake, probably to facilitate comfortable handling of the tool. The flint is 'boomerang' shaped, and there is some retouch along the inwardly curving edge. The tool was probably intended to be held with the thumb held over the concaved ventral face allowing the tool to be used comfortably as a scraper or knife. The flint is a pale cream in colour, with grey patches and some pink/grey cortex. It measures 38.48 mm long, 19.76 mm wide, 9.62 mm thick and weighs 3.8 grams.

Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: MESOLITHIC

A flint flake, apparently retouched to form a scraper. Cortex remains on one face. There appears to be a small amount of pressure flaking at the distal end to form a scraping edge. The flint measures 46.23 mm long, 24.14 mm wide, 17.17 mm thick and weighs 13.9 grams. The flint is a cream to grey/brown colour with a small area of pink cortex remaining. Other Mesolithic material from the area suggests this flint may also of this date.
