A cast copper alloy Medieval altarpiece. The figures are represented in high-relief on the outer surface, but the reverse is hollow forming a sub ‘C’ shaped section. The reverse has a well developed shiny dark green patina. The outer face of the mount depicts three standing figures with the taller figure appearing to hold a child. The third figure is possibly kneeling towards the other two figures. The figures are wearing drapery, however any other details of the figures are not clear due to corrosion and surface abrasion. Along the lower edge there is an incomplete circular perfor…

Incomplete cast lead or lead alloy pilgrims ampulla dating from the medieval period; late 13th - late 15th century (1250-1500). The pilgrims’ ampulla is broadly sub-rectangular in plan and profile. The lower part has been lost but would have had a rounded convex base that tapers slightly to form a waste at the mid point. This then flares outwards towards the upper edge which although damaged is complete. Where the ampulla sides flare there are two (one on either side) complete integral cast loops. These loops have an oval cross section. The ampulla has been flattened whilst the lower…

Lead ampulla that has a circular chamber, there would have been a long rectangular neck with flanking handles but this has been truncated just above the flask. This is an old, jagged break that suggest the neck has been deliberately bent and ripped off, possibly in an act to gain access to the contacts of the chamber. The chamber is decorated with raised detailing consisting of, on the obverse, a raised design of a compass-drawn flower of six large pointed petals with details also in relief. The reverse depicts a crown, the lining of which is hatched. The object has a light gre…

An incomplete copper alloy annular brooch of Medieval date (c. AD 1200- 1400). The brooch frame is circular in shape and a flattened hexagon in cross section owing to facets on the upper and lower surfaces of the brooch. A c.4mm rectangular section of the frame is recessed to secure the now missing pin. This recess is, according to Egan & Pritchard 2002, diagnostic of annular brooches when comparing them to annular buckles. The upper surface of the brooch is decorated with repeated transverse incised grooves but at a slight angle with a saw or file. The lower surface is undecorated, w…

A medieval silver annular brooch. The frame is formed from silver wire, half of which is round in section, while the other half has been formed into square wire, twisted to give the appearance of cabling, with punched decoration running along the twists. There is a constriction for the pin (now missing), at which point the brooch is broken, probably at the point of the original soldering. The brooch is otherwise in good condition. The brooch dates to the 13th-14th century. This is a well-known type of medieval brooch. See SUSS-7AC4AA; HAMP-999097 and DOR-715865 for similar examples. …
