Broad period: MODERN
County: County of Herefordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Cast copper alloy fitting from a firearm (longarm) probably a rifle or musket of probable post medieval or modern date (1650-1850). The fitting is from the underside of the gun barrel and would have held the ram-rod in place. It is irregular in plan and profile and is formed from a cast hollow cylinder. At one end of this cylinder is an integral cast length of metal with a shallow D shaped cross section. This length of metal tapers along its length and has been bent to form a U shaped hook. There is a large stress fracture along the edge of this hook where it meets with the cylinder. …

Cast lead bi-faced plaque of modern date (1857-1870). The plaque is one of a number which are known commonly as ‘Billy and Charley’s’ or the ‘Shadwell Forgeries.’ They were produced as a series of fake antiquities in direct response to the growth of the antiquities market in the Victorian period. This example is bi-faced. On one side is a radiate crowned bust facing right. The bust has an elaborate brooch formed from pellets, on either side of the figure are the letters CS. This image is contained within a circle. On the outer edge of the circle are a series of letters and…

Object type: MOUNT
Broad period: MODERN
County: County of Herefordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete heraldic mount provisionally dated to the early modern period 1650-1850. The mount is formed in two parts: the back plate is a very poor cast copper alloy amalgam which contains a considerable amount of lead alloy (evident in the grey corrosion product and typified by flakey laminated corrosion). The front plate is formed from a heavily incised and relatively thick silver sheet. The sheet has been fixed to the back plate by a combination of crimping and probably solder. The overall design on the front face is that of a gated tower or turret, the base of which sits on a twist…

Gold finger ring / 'posy ring' with incised inscription on interior face dated to the early modern period (post 1708). The finger-ring is formed from a D shaped section hoop of gold, being circular in plan. The edges of the ring have been slightly abraded and have small notches cut into the band caused by the movement in the soil. The inscription is incised into the internal face of the ring and is cut in an italic hand. It reads: God for me apoynted thee. The letters are slightly florid with slight embellished scrolls. After the inscription is a single rectangular stamped cartouche, …

Large fragment from an Iron Cauldron of later medieval – early modern date (1350-1850). These vessels are very practical and therefore their design remained constant for a long time. This example is likely to date after 1650 due to the condition of the metal; however an earlier date cannot be ruled out. Approximately 1/8 of the vessel survives; it has a wide everted angular rim which extends into the body of the vessel. The body tapers and swells presumably to form a wide mid-point which tapers to a dished base. On one edge a small rod-like angular handle survives, this is attach…

Cast copper alloy signet ring dated to the very late post medieval / early modern period c. 1750 - 1850 AD. The ring is complete having a wide central bezel with a shield shaped design on it. This shield is engraved and the detail is difficult to interpret. One possibility is that it is of a bust facing right (left in impression) wearing a ruff with a pointed beard and possibly long hair or a pony tail, this could be interpreted as either Shakespeare or Walter Raleigh. If this interpretation is incorrect then the design may be a debased coat of arms. The hoop of the finger ring is dec…

Cast copper alloy looped mount, possibly a furniture eschetcheon, of later post medieval or early modern date (1650-1800). In plan the mount is best described as pelta shaped, being formed from two oval lobes. In cross section the mount is sub-rectangular. The lower part of the front face of the mount is folded back upon itself to form a U shaped hook; however the upper part now broken seems to be rolled back upon itself to form a figure-of-eight.
