An irregular fragment of cast copper alloy plate of uncertain date. The fragment is broadly rectangular in plan and cross section. All edges are heavily eroded and abraded; they do not represent the original edges. The upper surface has a poorly preserved cast pattern comprising radiating elements between oval lentoid open loops. It has a deep green coloured surface patina. A direct parallel has not been found although it is highly likely that it is from the rim of a decorated metal dish - possibly a chafing dish of later medieval date (AD 1200 - 1600). The fragment measures: 33.…

A cast copper alloy ring of unknown date, most probably medieval (1250-1600). The function of the ring is unknown, given its size, wear and distortion it is most likely to be from a harness fitting. The ring is oval in plan and has a distinct angular sub-triangular cross section. The width of the ring is relatively uniform. There is no decoration on either the outer or inner surfaces. The internal edge of the ring is worn suggesting that it may have been a belt ring used to tighten or secure a leather strap; being so slight it is possibly part of personal dress. The ring has a well pr…

A large lead alloy spill of lead alloy of uncertain date or function - but most probably being of 17th century date and spill from casting - potentially lead alloy musket balls. The irregular splatter of lead measures 22cm length 18cm width and is 8cm high. It weighs approximately 6 kilograms. The upper side of the spill is flat and smooth whilst the underside is formed of tiny rivelets conjoined together. The area is well known for a 17th century / civil war seige - although the spill could be from building work / guttering water pipes of a similar or later period

Cast copper alloy ring of probable Roman - Modern date (50 - 1800). The ring is circular in plan and lentoid (hexagonal) in cross section. There are traces of irregular file marks on several surfaces. There is no obvious cast or incised decoration present. A slight thickening of the ring is present on one edge - this maybe remains of a casting jet. The ring is oval in shape due to distortion and has wear facets on internal surfaces from use. The ring is a dark - mid greenish grey colour with a well developed patina which covers all surfaces. The patination of the metal would suggest a…
