Object type: FLAKE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: County of Herefordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A Mesolithic flint flake, subject to a small amount of retouch. The flake is irregularly shaped, and may have been broken. No clear bulb of percussion is visible and it is difficult to determine where the flake was struck. One edge appears to have some retouch. The flake is sub triangular in shape and trapezoidal in section. It measures 25.08 mm long, 19.71 mm wide, 4.26 mm thickand weighs 1.6 grams. It has a pale grey to pink patina.

A Mesolithic flint implement, probably a waste flake. The flake does not seem to have been retouched after having been struck from the core. A possible notch on the left lateral edge may simply be damage. The flake measures 32.4 mm long, 10.57 mm wide, 4.25 mm thick and weighs 1.5 grams. It is sub-trapezoidal in section. The flint has a pale grey to white patina.

A Mesolithic broken flake. The flake does not seem to have been retouched after having been struck from the core. It has been broken at some point since deposition, as the grey patina at the break differs from that on the surface of the flint which is a pale cream colour. The flake measures 25.5 mm long, 15.94 mm wide, 4.84 mm thick and weighs 2.0 grams. It is sub-triangular in section.

A Mesolithic scraper on a flake. The tool has some retouch on both lateral edges and on the distal edge. It measures 17.98 mm long, 10.44 mm wide, 2.95 mm thick and weighs 0.6 grams. It is lozenge shaped in section.  The flint is a pale cream to white in colour.

A Mesolithic blade. The blade measures 23.85 mm long, 12.98 mm wide, 3.94 mm thick and weighs 1.3 grams. It is triangular in section. The blade appears to have been snapped at its proximal end, although based on the even patina on the flint this is an ancient break. The left lateral edge is still sharp, whilst the right edge has been blunted using retouch from the dorsal face, presumably to facilitate comfortable handling of the blade. A ridge, parallel to the lateral edges, runs down the centre of the blade. The flint is a pale cream colour.

A broken Mesolithic blade. The remains of the blade measure 20.0 mm long, 11.62 mm wide, 3.14 mm thick and weighs 0.7 grams. It is trapezoidal in section. A different colour in the patina at the break suggests that the break occurred sometime after the original deposition of the flint.

A Mesolithic blade. The blade was probably a waste piece, although there is some slight retouch on the left lateral edge at the proximal end. It measures 53.48 mm long, 17.21 mm wide, 9.62 mm thick and weighs 6 grams. It is sub-triangular in section, with a central ridge which is parallel to the lateral edges. A large amount of cortex remains on the dorsal face, particularly around the central ridge.  The flint is a dark grey colour with cream to white inclusions and a cream coloured cortex.

A Mesolithic notched blade. The blade is sub-rectangular in shape and measures 25.44 mm long, 12.52 mm wide and 3.83 mm thick. It weighs 1.6 grams. A notch is located on the right lateral edge near to the proximal end of the blade, applied using pressure flaking from the ventral face. A further smaller notch is situated mid way up the left lateral edge, this time applied from the ventral surface. The lack of an obvious bulb of percussion suggests that the blade was snapped, and based on the even patina at the break this probably occurred in prehistory. The flint has a pale cream to gr…

A Mesolithic flint flake. The flake measures 33.81 mm long, 16.5 mm wide, 4.8 mm thick and weighs 2.0 grams. There is possibly some slight retouch on the right lateral edge near the distal end. The flake is sub-triangular in shape. The flint is pale grey to white in colour. A pink tinge to the flint at the proximal end which is at odds with the rest of the colour of the flint may relate to heat treatment of the core before the flake was knapped.

A Mesolithic flint knife formed from a flake. The flake is partially cortical, with approximately one third of the dorsal face, on the right side, covered with a brown cortex. There is retouch along the lateral edge on the dorsal face, removing the cortex along the edge. This may have been to blunt the edge, facilitating more comfortable handling, or it may have been to ease its fitting into a handle or haft of some sort. The left lateral edge has a small amount of retouch, but otherwise the edge is naturally very sharp. There is also possible retouch at the distal end, which may have…

Object type: CORE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: County of Herefordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A Mesolithic flint core, the raw material from which flint artefacts were struck. The core has clearly been used for the manufacture of several bladelets and flakes. A flat platform shows the direction from which the flakes and blades were knapped. It is part cortical, with a small amount of pale brown cortex on one side of the striking platform. The rest of the flint is a dark grey in colour. It measures 26.12 mm long and 19.1 mm wide. It weighs 10.8 grams. Some slight brown discolouration on parts of the flint suggests burning.

A Mesolithic flint flake. The flake is broken at both ends and based upon the difference in patina at the break this was apparently done some time after deposition of the flint, but how long ago is difficult to say. There is some irregular retouch on both lateral edges, but as this is quite irregular it may be more likely to relate to damage than deliberate working. The flake measures 20.97 mm long, 11.11 mm wide, 2.83 mm wide and weighs 0.9 grams. It is trapezoidal in section. It has a pale grey patina which is a darker grey to brown at the breaks.
