A flint lithic implement, possibly a blade, dating from the Neolithic to Bronze Age period, c. 4000 BC-1800 BC. The blade is narrow and sub-rectangular in plan with a pointed tip. The blade has a serrated edge but the facets and the dorsal face show no signs of a strucked flint apart from a small notch at one end. The serrations could be due to plough damage but the flint seems to show signs of a considered design. The flint is a light - dark grey with patches of orange colouration. Measurements: Length, 37.24mm; Width, 10.51mm; Thickness, 4.35mm; Weight, 1.6g

A complete bevelled pebble with probable hammer use wear of Mesolithic date. The tool is oval in cross section and tapers slightly from one end to the other. It is bevelled at one end and shows use wear consistent with hammering at the other. Bevelled pebbles are fairly common finds on later Mesolithic sites, particularly along the coast. They are commonly interpreted as being used in the processing of seal skins. This particular tool has been used as a hammer in addition to the bevelled edge, and may have been carried inland for this purpose.

Flint projectile point, possibly a spearhead rather than a large arrowhead, with unimarginal worked edges on all margins of the dorsal face. There is continuous retouch around the entire margin, with a large flake removed on both faces at the proximal end, removing part of the bulb of percussion on the ventral face and creating a thinner profile for hafting. The distal end is pointed and slightly to the right of the medial line. The vental face is untouched, unlike various piercing tools of the time, apart from the flake removed to facilitate hafting. The flint is a mottled grey to bu…

Flint saw, trapezoidal in plan, rectangular in profile and triangular in section. There is finer retouch on the right margin of the dorsal face, creating the serrated edge used for sawing, and the left margin is backed for handling. The proximal end has been snapped off at the bulb of percussion and there is a layer of cortex remaining on the dorsal face at both the proximal and at the distal end, suggesting that this is a primary flake. These two patches of cortex are connected by the medial ridge which runs almost parallel with the left margin, as it is also slightly curved. The dis…

A group of 43 worked flints, cores and waste flint fragments found in a period of 105 minutes on bare ground on the access strips in a daffodil bulb field. The scatter concentrates towards a bend in a brook with the closest approach foiled by field boundary and country lane. Back from the stream the flints peter out to nearly zero then increase to where the stream is crossed again and the 850+ scatter recorded as CORN-3A0FF2 etc on the other side. The small group recorded here as far as can be seen includes elements from The Mesolithic through to the Bronze Age and is likely another …

A group of 65 miscellaneous tools and utilised flint and chert flakes of many kinds from a 2 hectare field amongst a total of 850 worked flint fragments including waste and utilised pieces and tools. The flints have individual GPS records to a few metres accuracy which form a cluster extending beyond but centred in the field close to a brook at the edge of its flat alluvial plain and slightly above. The flints form a broad funnel to a crossing point and continue less frequently on the other side. There is no modern obvious preferential ford but fallen branches make natural bridges and…

Elongated piece of translucent light brown coloured flint with a cream inclusion. Te dorsal face exhibits a single medial ridge running from the proximal to distal edges. The distal edge terminates as a point, with both sides appearing to have been struck, to produce the point. The ventral face is smooth in appearance with no obvious indication of retouch around it edges. This piece could be described as a failed burin, piercer, or tanged tool. Very small but indeterminate tool.

Rectangular shaped piece of mid grey coloured flint. The proximal edge appears abraded and uneven, the distal edge is also uneven but this could be due to a fault within the material on the left side of the edge. The left and right margins are blade like in appearance and could have been utilised as such. The dorsal face is typical in appearance of a piece of material having been removed from a core side. Exhibiting several negative scars on the face. The ventral face is relatively smooth in appearance and texture, a bulb of percussion is still present at the proximal end with some co…

Oval piece of flint which has been subject to intense heat, the dorsal face retains approximately 30% cortex covering which is reddish in colour, probably as a result of heat exposure. The flint itself is two tone grey in colour and exhibits faults and fractures throughout its surface. The cortex is smooth to the touch and typical of material associated with beach pebbles. The edges are ragged and uneven, no obvious indication of retouch along any edge although this could be hidden due to the damage caused by the exposure to intense heat. The ventral face is smooth in appearance a…

Translucent grey coloured piece of flint, plano convex in profile. This piece originated from a core, which was then converted from a flake into what appears to be a serrated blade. The proximal edge appears straight and untouched, while the right and left margins, certainly the left margin has been subject to light retouch along its edge, the right margin isn't so obvious. The upper part of the right margin and distal edge appears flat in profile and may have been broken off the edge is dull implying an older break. The left side of the distal edge terminates into point on its joinin…

Oval piece of dark grey coloured flint with off white inclusions. The dorsal face exhibits several ridges with negative scars, distal edge appears rounded and may have been deliberately manufactured. The right margin is more blunt than the left and could be classed as having been backed, there does appear to be evidence of retouch but it is slight. The left margin is more shallow and sharp in appearance. The proximal edge has been broken implying this implement was much larger. The ventral face is smooth in appearance and texture, some conchoidal rippling present in the surface. Possi…

Ovoid shaped piece of dark grey coloured flint. The dorsal face protrudes higher from the face at the proximal end, sloping down toward the distal edge. The proximal edge appears broken and uneven, with the right margin curving gentle out toward the medial then back in terminating to a point at the distal edge. Possible serration marks on the edge of the margin, but these are very small and slight. The left margin appears to reflect the right margin in is convex appearance, although there doesn't appear to be any retouch marks along its length. The ventral face is divided between an u…

The proximal edge appears straight and may have been subject to light retouch along its edge. The right margin is convex in appearance with the upper part of the margin exhibiting a very straight line, terminating at the distal edge. Elongated piece of light grey coloured flint, The upper part of the right margin appears to have been subject to light retouch, leading up to the distal edge which terminates as a sharp point. The proximal edge is uneven and rugged in appearance with the left margin appearing flat in places although the area around the medial is flat, possible strike point from a core ? This piece doesn't have an obvious dorsal and ventral face, appearing triangular in profile, definite retouch has occurred on one edge, possible use as a piercer, manufactured from a waste flake. Probable piercer.

Triangular shaped piece of light grey coloured flint. The dorsal face exhibits several negative scars running proximal to distal indicating possible core face. There does appear to be some traces of gloss on the dorsal surface, specifically on the edge of the right side. The proximal edge is irregular and abraded, with the right margin convex in plan, a blade type edge on its upper area, but no positive retouch along the edge. Triangular shaped piece of dark grey coloured flint, which has been subjected to intense heat. The Dorsal face exhibits classic signs of being damaged by heat, fracturing and blow out marks are evident across the face. The proximal edge retains a small piece of cortex, which does not provide enough evidence of source. The right and left margins are both damaged and irregular in appearance. The distal edge is smoother in appearance but contains fractures within the surface of the material, the edge is convex in plan with some pitting. The ventral face is also damaged in appearanc…

Mid grey coloured piece of flint with off white speckling within the surface. The dorsal face is uneven in appearance and consistent with a removed core face (core rejuvenation flake), several negative scars and termination fractures would support this observation. The right margin appears blade like from just below the medial until the join with the distal edge. The distal edge looks to be broken, edges still relatively sharp but uneven. The left margin is uneven in appearance, does have sharp edges on the indents but would not provide a level cutting platform. The proximal edge …
