A small flint handaxe of stained flint dating to the Middle Palaeolithic. It is sub-triangular in form. The object has a shallow S-shaped profile. It is covered by removals on both faces; the ventral face is far more intensively worked with far smaller removals than the dorsal. The sides are somewhat battered, while the distal end is broadly straight (this is where the axe would have been held). The removals have been smoothed a little by water action. The ventral face is of a largely orange hue, while the dorsal features off-whites and more brown colours.

Object type: FLAKE
Broad period: PALAEOLITHIC
County: City of Southampton
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A small tertiary flint flake, undiagnostic, and so given a general prehistoric date. It is of a grey brown colour, with some patinisation resulting in a lighter grey patch on both faces, and a darker surround on the dorsal face. There is some edge damage which is estimated to have occured in antiquity, but the flake is in otherwise good condition.
