De Jersey (2015) writes: "HENRY WOOLCOMBE, Esq. in a Letter addressed to Nicholas Carlisle, Esq. Secretary, dated Plymouth, April 2, 1832, gave an account of the discovery of five gold and eight silver coins, by a workman employed in clearing a portion of the head or soil of a limestone quarry, situated [at] Mount Batton [sic] The gold coins were of rude workmanship, concave on one side and convex on the other, having on the first-mentioned an impression of parts of a horse, and a distinct impression of a chariot-wheel, with a variety of round balls, heads of spears, &c. Robertson 2000, 139 no. 615: ""About three years since, while preparing for building operations on Vinstone estate, Compton Gifford, near Plymouth, a labourer dug up at the foot of a hedge, near the surface, an earthen vessel containing probably from three to four hundred Roman coins. The vessel was unfortunately destroyed by the labourer, who took possession of the coins, and the find was only heard of by accident. The coins were all third brass, of the lower empire, and, for the most part, in fair condition, very few showing signs of wear. Those which I have seen are chiefly of the …

Description of the coins The coins were minted between AD 318 and 324, and are a denomination commonly known as the nummus. The coins were produced at a number of mints around the empire (with an expected bias towards the local Roman mint of London). The coins from the earlier find are also from within the same narrow time-period. Summary mint London Trier Siscia Uncert. Total 318-324 36 25 1 18 80 Irregular 1 1 Total 36 25 1 19 81 Conclusion On the balance of probabilities, therefore, I conclude that these coins were buried together as a hoard and constitute a prima facie case…
