A complete plain gold finger ring of unknown date but probably from the post medieval - modern period. The ring is very thin, undecorated band. It has an oval cross-section, forming a 'traditional court' shape band. There is a slight chip or scratch in the object. There is no hallmark or any other diagnostic feature to the ring. The object is similar in style to WMID-E6F361, WMID-E6E061 and ESS-F1E6C3. Natalie Zimmer (pers.comms) has confirmed that because the object has no features that would enable a secure date, there is not enough evidence to date this ring to pre-1719. T he…

The sides of the object are bent inwards, probably the result of post-depositional processes. The surface of the object is decorated with two sets of incised parallel lines that form a chevron pattern; in places, these are intersected by incised lines that run in opposition to them, thus creating cross-hatching. The shield has an engrailed saltire on it with a rose or cinquefoil in the upper part of the shield. It can often, as here, be difficult to tell the difference between a rose and a cinquefoil.
