A complete, heavily worn silver denarius issued by Republican moneyer P. Fonteius Capito, dating to 55BC, as RRC 429/1. Heavy wear has worn away the borders of dots. Appears to be the first of its type recorded by the PAS.
Obverse: Bust of Mars, right, helmeted and draped, with trophy over shoulder. Border of dots.

This is the third specimen of coin with this reverse type - all three coins share the same reverse die. Note that MILITVM is incorrectly spelt as MTLITVM. One is in Paris and the other was sold at UBS 78 (9 9 2008), lot 1928. This coin shares the same obverse die as the UBS piece.

Five fragments of silver badge in the form of a cockerel, made in repoussé technique out of thin sheet metal, and externally engraved to provide crisp details of feathers and wings. There are the remains of four wire attachment loops soldered to the reverse, one at the back of the head, one on the tail, and to on the 'ground' the cockerel stands on. There is a plain scroll running beneath the cockerel's breast engraved with the motto Si deus nobis/cum ('If God if for us, [who can be against us?]' - Romans 8.31) in neat lower case italic script.
The height of the cockerel is 82.6mm…
