The flan is pierced to the left of the bust and another perforation on the edge below the chin.

An incomplete Roman pierced debased silver coin. The inscription is illegible but it is probably a silver radiate of the joint reign of Valerian and Gallienus (AD 253-260), perhaps Gallienus with temple reverse cf RIC 10, Gallic mint.
This coin has been pierced 1.2mm in from the edge of the flan at the 12 o'clock position when viewing the obverse side of the flan. This circular hole has a diameter of c.1.8mm.

A plated silver radiate of Gordian III (AD 238-244), dating to the period c.AD 238-244 (Reece period 12). P M TR P IIII COS II P P reverse type depicting Apollo seated left holding branch, resting elbow on lyre. Prototype of the mint of Rome. This is a hybrid type combining an obverse of Rome issues 1-3 and a reverse of Rome issue 4 (cf. RIC IV.3, p. 25, no. 88 for the reverse type). Similar hybrids are noted in RIC and an example in the British Museum from the Beachey Head hoard (BM 1966,0909.2) combines a similar obverse with a P M TR P V COS II P P reverse type.
