Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Middle Bronze Age to Early Iron Age chert burin. It has been formed on a secondary piece of black chert streaked with grey chert, possibly a worked out core from an earlier period as there is a variation in patination. The retained limestone cortex on the proximal end exhibits a high degree of wear, and there is wear gloss on most of the facial ridges. There are fresher removals to the tool's mesals, three long thin ones defining the longer edge, and the shoulder of the shorter shaped with a single removal on the shorter mesal at its distal end. The longer mesal has very fine, short, …

Object type: PIPE (SMOKING)
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Calderdale
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Post Medieval clay pipe stem. At some stage the mouth piece broke off but teeth marks at the narrower end show that it continued to be used. It may well have been deliberately broken off to form a type of home made 'cutty' or 'nose warmer' pipe used by manual workers & those engaged in outdoor activities. This would be compatible with its moorland find spot. Based on its bore diameter, it dates from c1720 to c1750 AD. Length 68mm, exterior diameter 7.5mm, interior (bore) diameter 2mm, and the mass 4.7g.

Knapped sandstone disc, of unknown use and unknown date. Unlike many of the other stone discs in the locale, a great deal of care has gone into the creation of this object and it differs from them in that respect. It is a more accurate circle and has been knapped in a very precise fashion that produces a consistently angled chamfer around its edge. It is also a lot thinner than the other discs. A number of uses have been posited for these objects. One is pot lids, but they show few signs of burning or sooting or any effects of heat, and pot sherds would make better lids. However th…

Crudely knapped sandstone disc, of unknown use and date, probably mid 19th century or earlier. A number of uses have been posited for these objects. One is pot lids, but they show few signs of burning or sooting or any effects of heat, and pot sherds would make better lids. However they all show a degree of wear. This particular artifact is the only one that lends support to the pot lid theory. On one face there is what appears to be a circular mark resulting from exposure to the effects of fire. It may be that this is the exception that proves the rule. Without analysis, the cause of …

Mesolithic worked honey/brown flint blade, with distal burin, from a secondary core flake. There has been a somewhat scrappy reduction to the height of the dorsal ridge. The cortex that remains on the dorsal indicates that the original nodule was awkwardly formed and this may account for the untidy working. Dates to between c10000 and c4000 BC.
