A fragmenet of a ceramic object, possibly a vessel of Roman to Medieval date. The object is irregular in plan and straight in profile. The outer face has been decorated with four diagonal grooves on one side and four almost vertical grooves on the other side resulting in an herringbone-like pattern. The internal face is undecorated. The fragment has been evenly fired and has a light sandy white fabric with no visible inclusions. It has been made from a very light-coloured clay. Patches of orange are visible on each face of the object and also within the internal fabric of the fragment…

The coins had evidently been deposited in bundles, probably wrapped in basket-work, as a fibrous matter was found adhering to many of them.

De Jersey writes: "On the index card for CCI 79.0098, Melinda Mays refers to a letter of 14 June 1913 from G.F. Hill, in the Red House Museum archives, mentioning the discovery of that coin "in a broken pot not preserved, with a Constantius and 6 SW British type". If the association with the Roman coin is correct then this might be better regarded as a Romano-British deposit. It is possible that one of the other coins was CCI 79.0225, a struck bronze stater (ABC 2175) found by Mr Pester at Pokesdown Cliffs, Southbourne, in 1912 (Haselgrove 1984, 137), but the precise location of th…

"During the excavation of the native British site at Hengistbury Head, on site 33: "Coins were found lying on the surface and all through the soil in the area indicated by the dotted line in fig. 17. The soil was riddled with rabbit burrows, and it was undoubtedly these animals that had caused the dispersion of the coins, a few having afterwards been carried farther afield by the plough. The coins had evidently been deposited in bundles, probably wrapped in basket-work, as a fibrous matter was found adhering to many of them. The largest collection, a mass of 734 coins lying on a sto…

Robertson 2000, 25 no. 134: ""The hoard of coins described in the following pages was found some years ago in Southants. It was contained in the earthenware pot here figured which was broken in the course of the discovery, but a sufficient number of the fragments were preserved to permit of restoration.. The hoard, which, so far as is known, has been recovered in its entirety, contains Roman coins, barbarous or semi-barbarous imitations of Roman coins, native British coins, both struck and cast, a few coins which may be either British or Gaulish, and one or two blanks." The coins…
