Lead alloy weight probably a spindle whorl dating from the Medieval to Post-medieval period 1300 to 1600AD. The object is broadly circular in plan and cylindrical and undecorated. There is a circular aperture through the centre of the object which may suggest this is a spindle whorl rather than a weight. These types of objects are hard to date as their appearance remained unchanged for many hundreds of years but this plain one is more likel to be post-medieval in form. It has been pointed out that the weight of a spindle whorl is suggestive of the thickness of yarn produced, with ligh…

A cast lead alloy weight of probable Medieval or Post-medieval date. It is a discoid weight with the numerals VIII inscribed on one side. Lead weights are common throughout the Medieval and Post-Medieval period. Biggs, N. & Withers, P. (2000) note that weights of this type with numerals are consistent with the Roman weight-system as well as the averdepois system, thus they could equally be 16th century. Given the growing number of these lead weights being found in the North West, it is more probable that these weights are significantly later in date (17th to 18th Centuries AD). Oth…

A rare 'Christogram' gold ring with a black-letter inscription in lower-case letters reading ihc engraved on a sub-oval bezel. The inscription means IESUS CHRISTOS SALVATOR (Jesus saviour of man). The ring is probably 15th century but could be earlier. In the Latin-speaking Christianity of Western Europe the most common Christogram is 'IHS' or 'IHC', derived from the first three letters of the Greek name for Jesus, Iota-eta-sigma. The Greek letter eta was transliterated as the Latin letter C due to the visually similar form of the lunate sigma or as Latin S since the two alphabets …
