An incomplete Roman Colchester derivative brooch of Polden Hill (Mackreth Group 4, flat wing ends type), dating to AD 80-120.  The brooch is T-shaped in plan. The wings are semi circular with missing end caps. The foot and catch plate are missing along with the spring and pin.  The wings are semi circular in profile. A near complete late Iron Age/Early Roman copper-alloy crescent type "Aesica" brooch of first century AD date, possibly dating to circa AD 25-100. The brooch comprises an upper curved bow and a lower flat bow. The spring mechanism is similar to the Polden Hill brooches (Aesica, type 3) in that the springs are contained within cylindrical wings which are pierced by a central axis bar. An incomplete copper alloy cosmetic mortar, dating to Late Iron Age to the Early Roman dating (1st to 2nd Centuries AD). The mortar is formed from a curved piece of copper alloy. The mortar has a U shaped cross section. It has an incomplete suspension loop situated on the upper edge on the opposing side to the groove. The loop has blunt terminals with well developed patinas suggesting an old break. The loop would have had a circular perforation when complete. An incomplete copper alloy medieval seal matrix. The seal matrix has a flat (but incised), circular base. Transverse to the base is a conical handle, hexagonally facetted, which narrows towards the collar at the base of the broken suspension loop at the top. The mount is shield-shaped with an integral tapering pin on the reverse which is bent upwards (presumably to hold the mount in place (see "Shield Shaped Mounts", 1989, Griffiths, p.1)). Mass: 5.7g; length: 30.8mm; width: 23.9mm; depth: 14.5mm. The blazon on the front of the mount consists of three bends gules (red). The central bend is wider than the outer two. An incomplete moulded clay tobacco pipe, of the Post Medieval period, dating to AD 1600 - AD 1800. The clay tobacco pipe has been moulded from a white pipeclay. The pipe fragment consists of a complete bowl. There is evidence of a horizontal line of dots just underneath the rim of the bowl. The rim of the bowl has been damaged slightly at the top. The outer surface has five circular concave holes in the form of a cross, as well as four oval shaped depressions at each corner. The inner surface contains a single stem-like projection which appears incomplete. The object has a greenish patina. It is 8.40 mm thick (including the projection) and weighs 17.2 gm.
