Record ID: NLM-E7FB06
Object type: BOOT
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Copper alloy boot fragment. A flat cast and probably pressed metal curved component, flanged on the inner side of its curve, probably from the heel of a work boot with metal inserts or attachments. This interpretation is suggested by the form, and by four drilled holes of diameter 2.5mm equidistantly distributed along the flange, which would have enabled the object to be incorporated into the layers of a stitched sole. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1800-1900 Length: 41.3mm, Width: 10.5mm, Thickness: 3.1mm, Weight: 5.87gms

Object type: UNIDENTIFIED OBJECT
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Copper alloy unidentified object. A rectangular sheet metal plate with a series of closely spaced [8 per cm] fine grooves of length 15mm extending from one straight edge, and with faint traces of grooves and a split in the opposite side. Probably for a craft usage. Marks of this form on bones have been associated with the making of pins, on ‘pinner’s bones’, though at a larger scale. Similar close spacing is also seen on comb teeth, so this object might have figured in the cutting of comb teeth – small one-piece bone combs for beards and moustaches are known fro…

Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Iron and copper alloy penknife fragment. Two iron blades and possibly another implement for a folding knife, retained between fragmentary flat plain copper alloy side plates of thickness 0.7mm by long rivets – whether one or two is now uncertain. A flat oval plate with faint traces of cross-hatching marks the end of the knife handle. Side plates of bone or ivory would have been secured outside the copper plates which remain and would have butted up to the end plate. The object has been exploded by the expansion of its corroding iron blades. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1800-190…
