Object type: DISCOIDAL KNIFE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Grey flint, appearing brownish under transmitted light, discoidal knife. A thin oval flake of lentoid section bearing covering angled scalar retouch across both its sides. Chipped at one end, probably recently. A lack of patination might hint at the recent disturbance of the object from a sealed context. Suggested date: Neolithic, 4000-2350 BC Length: 35.3mm, Width: 28.5mm, Thickness: 7.6mm, Weight: 8.216gms.

Grey flint with cortex debitage. A small thick fragment with cortex trimmed from its dorsal side by the hard hammer removal of broad flakes. The ventral surface appears unworked, possibly arising from natural breakage of a segment from a nodule with crystalline inclusions at its heart. Suggested date: Neolithic, 4000-2350 BC Length: 36.6mm, Width: 22.3mm, Thickness: 13.4mm, Weight: 10.41gms

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Grey flint with cortex possible axehead. A thick oval chunk of lentoid section with flakes removed overall by multangular hard hammer strike; those scars on the dorsal side include notably rippled marks, whereas this is less pronounced on the ventral surface. A use as a scraper seems as likely. Suggested date: Late Neolithic, 2700-2350 BC Length: 49.0mm, Width: 35.44mm, Thickness: 15.3mm, Weight: 27.29gms

Opaque grey flint possible debitage. A small flat-sided flake with broad flakes struck from its dorsal side and a flat ventral surface. One edge has a part of a positive hinge fracture, and the others bear very short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect. The finder kindly suggests this to be a chisel arrowhead; its flat thin profile might support this, though there is little else to confirm it. Suggested date: Neolithic, 4000-2350 BC Length: 23mm, Width: 17.9mm, Thickness: 3.5mm, Weight: 2.19gms

Grey-brown translucent flint of high quality with cortex spot, possible backed blade. A long flake with broad and narrow parallel flakes struck longitudinally from its dorsal side, and with a bulb at the narrower end of a rippled ventral surface. Short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect, perhaps combined with the results of edge-on impacts, follow one long straight edge; cortex remains along the opposite edge, where an edge may also have been trimmed. The object may have been incorporated into a sealed context until recently. Suggested date: Early Neolithic, 4000-3500 BC L…

Grey flint possible backed blade. A nearly square flake with a hinge fracture and a flat surface on its dorsal side and a bulb on the ventral. Misty white patina has developed over these surfaces, suggesting the flake was discarded and exposed to a calcareous environment. This patina was subsequently removed by short abrupt retouch executed from the [original] ventral aspect, forming a cutting edge on two adjacent sides. The Neolithic could presumably accommodate both primary and secondary working. Suggested date: Neolithic, 4000-2350 BC Length: 32.8mm, Width: 29.5mm, Thickness: 6.9mm…

Pale grey flint debitage. A sub-triangular flake with broad and narrow parallel flakes removed from its dorsal side and with a bulb at the narrower end of the ventral surface. Light misty patina suggests the object has endured a period of exposure to a calcareous environment. The finder kindly suggests an identification as a chisel or tranchet arrowhead, though the curved profile would appear likely to lead an arrow astray. Dark grey flint knife. Oval flake with broad flakes struck from its dorsal side and with a gently bulbar ventral surface. Short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows parts of the edge where it is at its thinnest; further chips on the edges on the ventral side may arise from impact damage. Pale grey flint with cortex, scraper. A thick flake with cortex trimmed by the removal of broad flakes, and with a bulbar ventral surface. Pale grey flint possible scraper, as kindly identified by the finder. A thin flake with broad parallel flakes struck from its dorsal side and with a concave ventral surface. Dense misty patina suggests the object has endured prolonged exposure to a calcareous environment.
