Object type: ARROWHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Cumbria
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Late Neolithic to Early Bronze Age flint barb and tang arrowhead, similar to a Ballyclare B, formed on a tertiary flake now patinated white. Multiple flaking scars cover both the ventral and dorsal sides. The fully invasive primary working has been retouched to all edges. It is triangular in plan with slightly projecting barbs on the base either side of a 5mm wide rectangular tang that projects 4mm beyond the bottom of the tangs. The barbs are more or less pointed and the tang only slightly rounded. Probably dates to between c2500 and c1500 BC.
Length 25mm, width 17mm.

Late Neolithic to early Bronze Age flint 'horseshoe' scraper. The scraper is circular with one straight edge in plan, and fabricated on a white patinated tertiary flake. The ccraper has been formed on the rounded distal end while the proximal end is the straight edge. There are three principle phases of working. In the first it has been roughed out with a series of invasive removals to the dorsal. The second phase consisted of shaping the distal edge with a series of long scaled semi abrupt removals. The final phase consists or short, sub-parallel, abrupt retouch on the working edge. …

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Early to mid Neolithic side scraper on a secondary flake of dark grey chert. Short, parallel to sub-parallel, semi-abrupt retouch to both mesals. The distal end has been shaped with an invasive intial removal terminating in a hinged fracture. It has then had very short sub-parallel, semi-abrupt retouch. There has been a reduction to the dorsal ridge. Cortex retained at proximal end, probably to aid grip. Dates to between c4000 and c2700 BC.

Early to mid Neolithic side scraper on a tertiary flake of grey chert. On one mesal two notches have been removed from near the distal end then the whole ventral edge has received short, parallel to sub-parallel, semi-abrupt retouch The resultant edge probably served three purposes, as a serrated blade, a notched scraper, and as a side scraper if the proximal end was favoured. The other mesal is 7.5mm thick. On its dorsal edge it has short, abrupt, sub-parallel retouch to the whole edge. The ventral edge has a series of scaled semi-invasive removals overlaid with short, abrupt, sub-pa…

Object type: AXEHEAD ROUGHOUT
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Cumbria
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Late Neolithic to early Bronze Age axe head roughout made from a tertiary flake of a Lakeland tuff. The tuff is similar to, but coarser grained than Langdale tuff. The roughout is thick-butted, double convex in section, sub-rectangular in plan, has crudely sub-rounded ends, and expands in plan from both the butt and the blade end to reach its maximum width 68mm from the blade end. Dates to between c2700 and c1600 BC.
The length is 177mm, width 83mm, thickness 52mm, and the weight 711.4g.
The rock type is formed from compressed volcanic ash and has a fine grained composition with…

Object type: END SCRAPER
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Lancashire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Flint flake end scraper of probable Neolithic to Bronze Age date (c. 3500 - 800 BC). The flint is dark brown in colour with slight light brown mottles. It is broadly trapezoidal in shape, with one straight and one curved long edge. The longer short edge displays short, semi-abrupt, scaled retouch on the dorsal face. The ripples of percussion on the ventral face curve across the length of the object. The object is 22.50mm in length, 14.02mm in width and 4.53mm in thickness. It weighs 1.70g.

Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Lancashire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Slightly damaged polished stone axehead of Neolithic date (c. 4000 - 2350 BC). The axehead is formed from grey stone, probably Langdale tuff. The surface of the object has been weathered and is rough and pitted, to a greater degree on one side than the other. The more weathered side is also darker in colour. There is some brown surface accretion on both sides. The object is broadly rectangular in shape with a lentoid section. It widens slightly at one end and narrows into an unsymmetrically curved cutting edge. The other (butt) end is badly chipped and damaged. The object is 153.5mm i…

Flint flake debitage of uncertain prehistoric date (c. 10,000 - 800 BC). The flake is D-shaped both in plan and section and formed from light-brown, mottled flint. There is a patch of cortex remaining on the dorsal face, suggesting this is a secondary flake. There is a very slight bulb of percussion at one end. There is no evidence of retouch. The flake is 49.95mm in length, 19.29mm in width and 4.13mm in thickness. It weighs 3.72g.

Object type: DEBITAGE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Cumbria
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Late Neolithic to Early Bronze Age flint debitage retouched to a scraper. The flint is pale brown in colour. It is a tertiary piece of debitage that has had short, stepped, abrupt to semi-abrupt retouch to one corner. This has produced an artefact that could have been utilised as a crude but effective scraper. Probably dates to between c2700 and c1600 BC.
The length is 24mm, width 16mm, and the thickness 10mm.

Broad period: NEOLITHIC

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Stone perforated axe-hammer of probably the very late Neolithic or early Bronze Age period, dating from c. BC 2500 - c. BC 1800.
Axe-hammers are also known as Battle Axes and some of the smaller examples have been recorded as perforated maces (mace-heads). The differences between these types / classifications are uncertain and the artefact type as a whole is in need of reassessment in line with modern discoveries and approaches to artefact studies. This is further complicated by signs of water wear on the artefact making it difficult to definitively identify as an axe hammer or mac…
