Object type: SADDLE QUERN
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Fine-grained Limestone saddle quern. A neat sub-rectangular block of stepped wedge-shaped profile, worn on its upper surface with a flat base which is indented only at its thicker end. The form is Neolithic, and a saddle quern would be used with a separate cobble grinding stone to grind corn to a coarse flour, and hence marks the advent of arable farming in the area whence it was reported. The small size and flat base – the latter perhaps suggesting use on a flat surface or even a table, which would be a remarkable feature to postulate in a Neolithic settlement – are perhap…

Object type: LEAF ARROWHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Buff coloured flint point, possibly early neolithic. The source record suggests an identification as a [leaf] arrowhead but the mass is greater than might be expected for a projectile tip; it also implies a broken butt. Suggested date: Neolithic, 4000-2500 BC

Broad period: NEOLITHIC

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Pale grey flint with cortex possible knife fragment. A large flake with an apparently curved cutting edge, neatly truncated on one end where a flat and possibly smoothed surface of lentoid form appears. A large flake has been removed from behind the putative cutting edge by hard hammer strike from the dorsal aspect, possibly affording a thumb rest. Short abrupt retouch executed from the ventral aspect appears to follow the curving edge, its progress marked by the removal of a pale patinated surface to reveal the pale grey flint below – though a similar colour change also appears …

A fragment of a Neolithic polished axe of Group VI Great Langdale volcanic tuff dating to c. 4000 - 2200 BC.
Only the cutting edge portion has survived and it is sub-rectangular in form and pointed oval in cross-section. The cutting edge has been reworked with a smoothed lateral facet or is very worn. The axe thickens towards the truncated end and there is some damage to the surviving lengths. Smooth surface with a greyish-green patina.
Length (originally the width, measured diagonally to the longest length): 65.69 mm; Width (originally the length)…

A Neolithic Greenstone axe presumed to be of Group VI (6), a product of the Langdale Pike axe factory. This example is an edge-polished flint axe, limited polishing it typical of the late Neolithic. It is covered in scaled and low angle flaking. The axe is pointed oval in cross-section and is broadly sub-rectangular, with a rounded polished cutting edge and a tapered, abraded and rounded butt.
The Langdale greenstone axes were traded from a quarry on Langdale Pike, Cumbria, and their distribution around the Humber estuary is denser than anywhere except around the p…

Blade-like flake. Secondary flake. Flat striking platform at the proximal end and a raised bulb of percussion with bulbar scar; it has weak conchoidal ripple marks on the ventral face indicating it has been struck by a soft hammer. The dorsal face has surviving cortex covering c.60% of the surface. There is evidence of retouch on the dorsal face edge with short, stepped, low angle retouch. Slight positive hing fracture at the top, rather thana rounded end/feathered out terminal.

Pale brown flint possible borer. A thin triangular flake with a tiny triangular point projecting from its shortest side. A pair of flakes were removed from the dorsal side, while the ventral surface is slightly bulbar. Short abrupt retouch delivered from both the dorsal and ventral aspects formed the point, with a further strip of very short abrupt retouch delivered from the ventral aspect along part of one of the longer sides. Object type: BACKED BLADE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Grey-brown flint with possibly marine derived ‘cortex’ possible backed blade. A narrow flake with a broad flake struck from its dorsal side and a concave rippled ventral surface. Long angled scalar retouch executed from the dorsal aspect travels parallel to the long edge, and was perhaps followed by short abrupt retouch adjacent. The cortex, which may be marine derived, may have been retained to permit pressure to be brought to bear on what must have been an ephemeral cutting edge. Suggested date: Neolithic, 4000-2350 BC

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Grey-brown mottled flint backed blade. A thick D-shaped flake with a single large flake trimmed from its dorsal side by hard hammer strike and with part of a bulb at one end of its ventral surface. Short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows the longer curving edge. The butt enabling pressure to be brought to bear may have been formed by trimming or loss of part of a slightly larger flake, as implied by the incomplete bulb; it is now attractively polished by use-wear. A flake may also have been detached by hard hammer strike delivered from the ventral aspect to improve…

Grey-brown semi-translucent flint with re-formed cortex strip, scraper. Broad and narrow parallel flakes have been struck from the dorsal surface while the ventral side is bulbar next to the re-cortified striking platform with a concave outer edge.
