A medieval silver coin; a continental sterling imitation crockard struck for John II of Avesnes, the Count of Hainaut (1280-1307). The mint is Valenciennes in Hainaut.
It is suggested that Valenciennes struck the earliest Hainaut sterlings in c. AD1290-1, then was closed during the rebellion of the town against John of Avesnes in 1291-7, and was then reopened in 1297 as documents show. See Mayhew number 24.
